I am getting married in front of my friends and family in Mexico on June 16th, but we are getting legally married (probably in sweat pants and no make up) at our county courthouse on June 11th before we fly to mexico. The reason for this is that to get married in another country you have to follow that countries rules for marriage. For some of them you have to be in the country for a certain amount of time before the ceremony, or sometimes you even have to be a CITIZEN. Then, after you are in that country for the minimal amount of time before the ceremony you have to get all the paperwork done that will be in a different language and get any medical screening, etc. and hope that it all goes well. After the ceremony, you have to have your marriage certificate translated to english so that it is accepted in the US. We decided it just wasn't worth it. We know our anniversary will be June 16th. And our friends and family won't know the difference. It's just not worth the headache to us. My fiance and I want to combine our medical insurance and to wait a year for our certificate to be translated and pay a fee for the translation isn't worth it.

I believe you can either apply through the U.S. consulate in whichever country your going to get married. I know that here in Canada you can get the form online, fill it out then bring it to the Government office to get it signed and paid for. They ask for birthdate, legal names of both parties, parents legal names and their country of birth, personal health number, mailing address & phone number. Then a marriage certificate is mailed and can be used within a 90 day period. I guess it would depend on which country your going to be married in. I know a couple people who were married in Australia as well as Mexico and they applied for their certificates there. As so long as they had their birth certificates, passport, proof of citizenship from country then that would make the information valid on the marriage certificate. There's a couple links you can check over if you like. The visapro link talks about how to go about attaining a visa for your spouse if needed to bring them back to your country, hope it helps.

The state that your going to get married in is the state that you will have to appy in.
You can't get a marriage lic, in one state, and get married in onther. all marriages are recorded in the County Court House of that states Capital. they are public records.
