When you put the key in the ignition does it just make a clicking noise? Do you still have lights? If that is the case, then most likely it is the starter. Did you notice if the battery light was on say yesterday or the day before. That is usually an indicator of the alternator going. If you jump start it with battery cables and it starts, keep track of where the battery indicator is when you first start it. If it seems like there is a low charge, then it can be a weak battery. Usually with a weak battery, if you leave your door open for five minutes the car won't start.

Most batteries don't last over 5 years and still hold a charge well. And since a battery that needs charging all the time puts a heavier load on your alternator, if your battery is that old, you could save yourself the cost of a new alternator ($250 or so) by installing a new battery now. You should also have the battery cables removed and cleaned well with a wire brush and reconnected to make sure as much power as possible is getting from the battery to the engine and car.

A bad battery can cause a starter to appear to be bad. I would take the car or just the battery and have them tested. Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts will test them for free, and they both offer free battery installation. I prefer Advance but what ever you get close by.

Put a new battery in it. Then see if any more troubles arise. That will likely take care of it. Be sure to coat the terminals on the battery with some sort of protector.
