I'm just a little upset, because, just before midnight on friday night I was pulling out of my street and I had my windows down. I heard a sound like someone comming at me and I let off the gas and froze for a sec.; I just couldn't believe someone would be comming at me so quick. When I saw the car I sped up. It just barely missed me doing 70 mph in a 40 mph zone. As he went passed and I turned to see I saw lights on top of the car (not on or flashing, just there). It was a cop! I couldn't believe a police officer almost hit my car, possibly injuring or killing myself or my girlfriend who was in the passenger seat!

No damage, no foul. Many calls are urgent and it is best for all concerned if the police are able to arrive unannounced. I am sure some police abuse the speed limit, just like any other job, you have rule-breaking fools. If someone had a gun to my child's head, nothing would make me happier that a cop sneaking up to a window and blowing the creep away before he could bring harm to my family. If this occurred on the street where you live, you are probably on that cop's rounds. If you see this again, then I would consider a complaint.

I've dealt with this question alot - here's the correct answer:

Police officers can only respond with lights and siren "code-3" for emergency calls such as a physical domestic in progress, traffic collisions with injuries, etc.

However, we routinely drive faster than normal for other calls when code-3 isn't authorized, or just isn't a good idea. A great example of this is a bank robbery. Another poster on here called an officer a"cheater" who was at a red light who turned on his lights to blow the intersection. I've done this lots of times - enroute to a priority call. If I'm responding to a bank robbery, I don't want the bad guys to hear my sirens a mile away, I want to be as stealthy as possible.

So before you assume the officer is doing it "just because" keep in mind you really have got no idea where the officer is going, or why. If he passes you at 100 and you see him at Carl's Jr later though, you could probably call and complain about that officer.

Oh I know what you mean... I've seen them speeding for no reason, and was just wondering again the other day if it was legal for the common driver to report a police car that seemed to be speeding for no reason.

I have also seen once or twice a cop put his lights on, go straight though the traffic light that had turned red...then turn his lights off. What a cheater!

So...apparently not sad to say.

yes we do. but was the officer going to a call that didn't require lights and sirens. you will never know. at the time maybe it was safe for that police officer to go over the speed limit. and did you have a radar gun to tell they were going 70 mph?

Police Officers can not break traffic laws unless they have all their emergency equipment operating. Their lights and siren must be on.

Not at all. They do what they tell us not too. In NY state where I live, there is a cell phone ban while driving. You get a very hefty fine for this, so we all have to drive around looking like we are talking to ourselves on our bluetooth headsets so we do not get fined. Yet you will see the cops driving around gabbing on there cell phones all the time

You cannot use the lights and sirens responding to all calls, they are professional drivers and as long as you do not do something stupid they will not hit you

Too bad. If you complain, another cop will beat you with a flashlight and plant cocaine in your car. Cut your losses and move on.
