Black leather sofas will never go out of style so I think you have many options. I think a great look would be to pick one color, I suggest a tan or khaki color and work with different shades of it to create a tonal effect. The two colors I would personally recommend are Dutch Boy's Golden Crust (N001)and Crisp Toast (N003). On the wall that the sofa will be on, divide it into squares, I cannot tell how to do this exactly because I don't have the measurements of the wall. However, if you like my idea I would be happy to talk to you on yahoo messenger or through email. Even though you only will be purchasing two colors, you will end up with three because you are going to mix the other two colors together to create your third color. For this look to work, you must purchase one of the colors in satin and the other in semigloss, eggshell, or matte. I think semi-gloss and satin would work the best. Also, even though I'm recommending Dutch Boy colors, I would take the paint chips (availiable at Wal-Mart) to either Benjamin Moore or Lowe's and get my paint from them. I mostly use Valspar, but I have grown to love Benjamin Moore since I have gotten into design more.
In keeping with the neutral palette, (I don't think rooms should be done in a "theme", but that the room should have a unified look. Because I think the goal is to create a pleasing atmosphere.) I think you should purchase an area rug with a tan base and maybe a blue accent so that it pops out. Because the basis of your room is a black leather sofa, we want to work with a warm color base and when you use a cool colored accent, it makes the room even more warm and inviting. Im just suggesting blue, but anything that you like will work. I think either some cherry or black occasional tables and ice blue window treatments would be maginificent. There are also some brushed nickel table lamps that I think would compliment the room wonderfully.
Again, I dont know what other furniture you possess, but I regularly go to furniture stores and I remember some of the things that I see. If you are planning on purchasing more pieces, I could email you with the information you need, because most of the things that I work with are national lines of furniture and it wouldnt be a problem to find them where you live.
Honestly, I have a picture of your room in the most generic sense in my head. I know I have thrown a lot at you, but I do truly have a vision. This is why I chose to go into interior design, there are things that they teach us in school. But you have to come into the field with creativity and ideas.

Begin with a color wheel... I prefer themes... and different themed rooms... You also have to decide what style brings you peace... a room with lots of stuff or an open room with very little...
As far as a black leather sofa, please tell me your room walls aren't white? That might be the first thing you do is put some color behind the couch... What themes go with black? A guy might choose a harley davidson themed room, a girl might would choose...hmmm, a hunters den style...a plaid blanket folded over an arm and back corner, a faux bear rug on the floor, dare I say, do they make "fake moose head?" some cute fishing lore and poles in a corner... you could really go all out with that...wood furnishings.. if you have some cute bears you could doll them up in fishing vests and stand them with a small retractable pole in their arm...
The skies the limit. You could even make it a betty boop room...black and red... but I would still steer clear of white walls... of course, you could always make a slip cover for your couch and choose what ever color you like.
I feel like the shiney brass trim and glass went out a long time ago when it comes to black furnishings....
I worked at a fabric store and got to see alot of color combinations etc. so i hope I gave you some ideas.

Google "interior decorating". Use stark colors; true white instead of "eggshell" for example. Teal accessories are great with black, but avoid using much yellow.

Pretty much anything goes with black. Tan or cream is nice with some other accent color thrown in like burgundy or forest green.
