Let your child's behavior on return from the visit with the grandparent be your indicator. I've not always been on the best terms with my kids' grandparents, but as long as they aren't bad-mouthing me, I tell the kids, "when you're with grandma, it's grandma's rules; here, you know what goes!" Be firm and matter-of-fact, and the kids will get used to it.

If the grandparent is really a poor influence, that's something else entirely.

Grandparents should follow the best parenting protocols just as should parents. Spoiling is never a good thing. It is always a set back for the child. There is not logical reason for the parents or grandparents to spoil a child.

LOL, spoiling the grandkids is the Grandparents job.
To a point. if you do everything that your grandchild wants, then it's going to be hard on the parents, when they say "No" to a toy,game..etc....
But you can't over spoil them with love.

Of course they can. They can spoil grandchilden just as much as a parent can. The only difference is that they can spoil the child and then send him or her home for the parents to put up with. The parents have to live with the spoiled child.

Yeah, but spoil is relative. What you consider spoil may not be spoiling a child to another person.

oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhh ya. i think i'm quite the expert on the subject. my grandparents spoil my cousins so much they are the biggest brats i have ever met. they are even so spoiled that they mature slower than other kids. it's so annoying it makes me want to slap my grandma sometimes.

Yes, and spoiled children grow up to be selfish adults.

nope! my grandma (may she rest in peace) always let us stay up for an extra half hour if we behaved or gave us extra m&m's for dessert, my grandfather would give us 2 scoops of ice cream when we asked for 1 scoop.
my mom spoils my nephew in a similar manner (my grandparents are my mom's parents). if he wants a little more ice cream, he gets it....if he wants to read a book before bed, she lets him read 2 books....well we read to him.....he knows the alphabet but a bit too young to read.....he's 3 yrs. old
