Hitting, in the real world, is assault. They should both be disciplined, the instigator more firmly. The larger individual might, in many (or certain) circumstances, be cautioned against using physical force against someone smaller, because they could more easily hurt them without meaning to. But if the young people were comparable in size, I would not have played the "don't hit girls" card. But there are a lot of people who still adhere to rigid gender roles, so I'm not surprised that happened.

"Singles & dating" probably isn't the best place for your question. ;-) I think there's a "parenting" subsection that might've generated more answers for you.

I'm a mom of 2 boys, ages 14 and 7.
And both of my boys know not to hit girls.
BUT, on the other hand, if a girl walks up to your son and just starts hitting him, then he does need to defend himself.
Otherwise the girl will keep on hitting him, because she can.
I've told my sons if a girl hits you, in the face, for no-reason, then you can SLAP her but DO NOT USE YOUR FIST.
Once she gets slaped back, she'll back off. knowing he's not going to tollerate it.
Also, I don't agree with the teacher, the girl should have been punished also.

you sure you are an adult? take a breath! good lord!

your son is wrong, and so is the girl. he should have walked away. i'm sure he is stronger than she is, and he needs to know that hitting anyone is wrong.
