Same way as Fox News people hate Rosie O'Donnel so much; that instead of doing a point by point discourse on why she says what she says, they opt to do ad hominems on her instead.

I think because it goes directly against the core uniting idea of all religions that something else created all of this. It is the one idea that can't at any fundamental level be reconciled with other religions.
For example, with comparing Judaism and Christianity you can at least say, "Jesus was a Jew, so I can respect the Jewish faith." or Jews can say, "Well, Christians respect the Old Testament, so they are a little off but they have some fundamental ideas correct."
With Atheism, there is no ability to relate to this. There is no common ground, and this is why atheists are considered one of the least trusted members of our society even though there is absolutely no reason for this.
As an atheist, I'd have to say though that in general people you meet are considerate. Online and in politics is where most of the disrespect lies. Just like I'm in general much more respecting of peoples beliefs to the person, as opposed to when I'm talking about the idea.

I can't understand it either. Surely people have more to do than worry about who believes in god. I don't know what the big deal is. Why do we always have to worry about what the other guy is doing. I am afraid that there are not a lot of people out there who respect others' opinions. It will never end. We live in a country that is "free". What I can't understand is why there are still people who make rules that take away freedoms because it suits them.

I cannot tell you about all people, but from a Christian perspective, here's what we have against atheism (or any other teaching other than salvation through faith in Christ alone).
The very basis of Christianity is this - we are all sinners and fall short of God's glory. That means EVERY person is on their way to Hell. The ONLY way to prevent this is to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior. (this is not "Just say this prayer and everything will be great...") God wants for every person who gets it to take the message to others. Fervently, as if their very lives depend upon it - although MUCH MORE is at stake.
Now that you understand what we believe God wants of us (I didn't say that you agree with it.) Wouldn't it be extremely hypocritical of me to NOT have anything against teachings that I believe lead people to Hell? This is where it's real important for Christians to understand the idea of loving the sinner and hating the sin. God loves atheists and Muslims and Hindus, etc. These and other sinners are the people He sent His Son to die for. He hates atheism and Islam and the Hindu religion. Those are the teachings that keep people from accepting His Son.
I care enough about atheists to want to save them away from atheism. Does that explain my position?

Because Atheists are seen as faithless people who just can't seem to have enough faith in their religion or God, and took the easy way out, just to exclude religion all together.
Personally, I have nothing wrong with Atheists but people who do just don't understand them and think they're constantly being offensive to them (and a lot are, I'm sorry, but I hear "Why do you believe in GOD?" and it frustrates me)

When your questions remain unanswered in a system which you follow and you are brave enough, you will quit and become an athiest.
But fortunately it is neccessarily not true that you will not find answers anywhere else.
If you try you will find out. A truth seeker is a good person and ultimately finds the truth.
An athiest to me, is the one who has lost hope in himself and stopped life long journey of searching the truth.
An atheist is disliked becoz his counterparts beleive that he has decieved them and their beliefs.

Personally, and I have absolutely no proof of anything, I think religious people fear the fact that we were once like them, that we turned away from their core reliefs, and they can't fathom why we turned away.

Because religion is about controlling people and atheists are outside this control. They have the freedom to think.

It is human nature to be intolerant of that which you do not believe. Some of us can overcome this instinct, but some of us cannot.
