Don't expect to get much for your trade-in, especially on such a high mileage car. Dealers don't usually bother trying to sell cars with that many miles on their own lot, they'll just send them out to wholesale auction and hence offer accordingly.
The most fuel efficient vehicles, year in and year out, have been the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. But realistically with your budget, you may end up trading in your 2000 Mirage and getting back a 2000 Civic, albeit possibly with more features and less miles (for $7000-8000 you can probably get a Civic EX with sunroof and 85k miles).

you might want to look at a new Nissan sentra their one of the most fuel efficient cars on the road, and very reliable also, you might not get it for what your wanting to spend though, your not going to get a new car for your old one and 6000 bucks, but it would be a nice down payment on a sentra, their not that expensive,a nice one would cost around 12-14 thousand right now with a few good options on it,the KIA is a pretty good car,and there on sale everywhere right now for around 10 thousand, but your old vehicle wont carry that much towards a new car,but it will help, good luck with it,hope this helps.
