My son is almost 3 years old and he has SOME of the symptoms of autism... he is "teriffied" of children his age, but he has never really been around any kids either. He is VERY shy i mean to the point that usually if someone talks to him that he doesn't know he will cry and want to go home. Other times it just takes him a little bit to "people watch" then he is fine... he is also obessed with fans... not watching or staring at them, just fans in general. If we go into a store he has to point them out and always has to tell me "fans on" or "fans off" 500 times a day! He speaks normally for his age. he makes eye contact and all that stuff i've read but its just that some things don't add up... like the problems with socializing, the fans, teriffied of doctors or any offices that he thinks is a doctor. (He was very sick and in the hospital 2 years ago) other than that, he seems very intelligent, loving, caring and loves to play (just not with kids) no he has not had any bad experiences.

I think it's worth bringing up to his doctor. Unfortunately, it's not an easy question to answer because autism is a broad spectrum disorder, meaning, that cases vary from mild to severe. More than likely, your doctor will (or should) refer him to a child behavoir specialist. Even if it turns out NOT to be autism the behavior specialist can more specifically address your concerns than a regular primary care pediatrician. You can find out exactly what is going on. But please DON'T WAIT!!! My son had similar symptoms and he does have PDD (a very mild form of autism). He was obsessed with fans and phones. I had him evaluated at 2 1/2 and he has been in therapy since. Early intervention is KEY and has done WONDERS for my son. No one besides his therapist can even tell there are any issues and he is functioning on grade level! So please, go with your gut! If you think there is just something a little "off" then have him seen. All educators stress the "early intervention" idea! Hope this helps...good luck!

it does not seem to me that your son is autistic. He may have issues with social skills which can be worked on with therapy. I would have him tested before you start school because its very hard for the kids if they are different in school. Also the summer is a great time for therapy as most people are not that busy. Talk to your pediatrician about it and see what his opinion is. Does he play with neighbors or cousins at all? His fascination with fans is really nothing to be worried about as some kids just love anything that moves. Good Luck!!

If you have concerns speak to your doctor. I really don't think there is anything to worry about though. I have three children and my first two were very shy and would react exactly the same way when anyone other than myself or my husband talked to them, even their grandparents. It would take them about 1/2 hour to get used to people when we went anywhere. My eldest son used to have a fascination with tractors when he was about 4, he got over it eventually. If your son was in hospital then that could very well explain his fear of doctors. Kids have a remarkable memory! Good luck!

Don't you think being in the hospital when he was 2 was terrifying enough and stuck with him? Our daughter was around the same age actually younger and to this day she still remembers that experience. It took her a very long time to get over some of the fears and still has them. We were worried about our daughter because she showed quite a few abnormal things and turned out she has Sensory Intragration Disorder. I would mention your fears and concerns to his ped and let her guide you from what she sees. There are a lot of kids that are extremely shy (I was one of those), I was obssessed with having everything in it's place and orgnanized according to color, shape and size. My Mother thought for sure something was wrong with me. I am as normal as they come. Some children have little quirks and expecially children that are very bright. I wouldn't doubt if he is very bright and these weird things come along with that genius.

The next time he's due for a checkup, bring up your concerns. Your description doesn't sound like autism to me, but it's being diagnosed at a far greater rate than ever before. Between autism and ADHD, it seems most kids have a disorder of some sort these days.

It does not sound like autisum to me. You still might want to have him evaluated if only to help you sleep better. Just be carefull not to let him be labled or put on some kind of medication with out being fully aware of the diagnosis and risks. Don't worry yet mom this could be normal for your child. Get educated and ask questions. What ever may be, just take it one day at a time and work through it. Good Luck!!

there is no one "test" for autism. depending on the type of doctor and their approach, a child can be diagnosed in a single visit. there will likely be a structured interview with you, possibly with your husband or someone else in the family and some questionnaires. some doctors may want information from the school as well.

Start with your family doctor of course. You may not know this but the public school's responsibility to your child begins at three so if you ask them too they will test him and if he has any problems including just socailization issues they will provide his therapy and give him the help he needs for free. I suspected my son of Autism and at first glance the evaluators from the school did as well but they ruled it out. Apparently the hallmarks to look for are getting stuck on an activity for long periods and when removed from that activity having tantrums that are major leading to self soothing behaviors that are repetitive. Anyway they can't determine what's wrong with him but they are going to bus him to pre school and get thim the help he needs what ever it is starting in september as he is just turning three in July.

I don't have a lot of experience with autism, but it doesn't sound like it to me. Since he's almost 3 you'll definitely want to bring it up at his 3 year well child checkup. The doc fear sounds explainable from his previous sickness. The obsession sounds like a 3 year old thing to me. Have you tried joining a playgroup to help socialize him?

For your peace of mind, take your kid to the doctor or a child psychologist.
The second option may be more amicable with your child, since many offices of these kind of practioners are filled uo with toys and are very colorful.
Whatever the diagnosis is, don't be scared. It's better to know than to imagine what your child has. Remember that.
