Pan fish are small fish like Bluegill, Perch, and Crappie,.
Yes they are very tasty , and one of my favorite freshwater fish to eat are those three species I listed
Worms or small minnows are baits that will catch them , use a size to hook and a bobber for them . keep your line length 2 to 3 feet under a bobber.
Or you can use a small split shot weight about 1 foot above yout hook ,and fish for them on the bottom
I hope ya catch some they are fun to catch

Sunfish and bluegill are panfish and they are excellent fish to eat and easy to catch, all you really need is a worm on a hook and you can catch pan fish all day.Sunfish are brightly colored with yellow and green scales Bluegill are not as colorful, mostly silver with of course a blue patch on there gills.A good sized eating panfish is about 9 or 10 inches long and a whopper in my neck of the woods is 12 inches,i heard the grow larger in the southern states so i guess it depends on where your at,any that we catch under 9 inches we throw back because there tough to clean when there that small,

Panfish are all from the same family of fish, they include bluegill, redear, yellow pearch, crappie and others.
Yep, they are very good to eat. A lot of people will eat them because they do not have a strong fishy taste or odor... say like trout or salmon.
The best way to fish for them varies from time to time and depends upon which species you are fishing for. Mostly you will use a single small hook, split-shot weight and bobber on 2 to 6 lb test line.
Take a partner, make sure you have a license and have a ton of fun!

RE:
What are panfish? Are they good to eat? Best way to catch them?
Hi, I just started fishing and the DNR site says this one lake mostly has panfish. What are they? Are they good to eat? And what kind of bait should I use to get them/what techniques should I use? I haven't been fishing since I was a kid so im kind of lost.

The panfish closely resembles a bass or a bream. It has a stout, deep body similar to that of a bluegill or redear sunfish, yet has a large bass-like mouth. The red eye and large mouth are the first conspicuous field marks of mature panfish. They vary from brassy to dark-olive green and often have a purple tint overall. Broad, irregular dark bars give it a mottled appearance. The soft-rayed portions of the dorsal and anal fins are marked with rows of dark spots. Three or four conspicuous dark stripes radiate back from the eye across to the cheek and gill cover.
There are no recognized subspecies. However, panfish readily hybridize with other members of the sunfish family.
They are Found throughout Florida.
panfish inhabit swamps, marshes, shallow lakes, slow-moving streams and canals with soft, muddy bottoms. They prefer to stay around aquatic vegetation, stumps, and snags and under the banks of streams and ponds. They have more tolerance for muddy water than most species.
panfish are solitary nesters that prefer to build their nest adjacent to some submerged object. Nests are found over a wide range of water depths. They often spawn more than once a year usually between April and August. Females may produce 3,000 to 23,000 eggs.
panfish are carnivorous. Crayfish, shrimp, insects and small fishes make up the bulk of its diet. Most of its feeding is done in the morning, as it seems to sleep at night.
panfish are capable of living up to eight years and may reach a length of 12 inches and a weight of approximately one pound.
The panfish is one of the more easily caught sunfish by anglers using cane poles and natural baits, spinning tackle with small topwater lures and shallow-running spinners. They strike hard, frequently breaking the surface of the water. The best place to catch warmouths is shallow water around trees, stumps, or vegetation. As a sport fish, specific bag and size limit regulations apply, and you can register a qualifying catch as part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's "Big Catch" program.
The panfish are good to eat when caught from clean water. Like other panfish they are relatively small and bony. The flesh is usually prepared by deep-frying after rolling it in seasoned cornmeal.
Hope my Info will help.

Yep. What everyone else has said... panfish because they fit in the bottom of a pan. I know they're tasty, I hear they're fun to catch, but I have no luck in fresh water until recently, so I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm saying when it comes to how to catch them.
Good luck.

The shop`s answer is way off. Light line and small hooks and a small bobber. Just the oppisite of the shop. Think about it how big is a Blue Gills mouth? Pan fish are used to eating Pan fish sized food larva, small minnows, worms, mayflies, crickets, etc. The most important thing is( if there are trophy pan fish) in the lake or river . You can`t catch them if they aren`t there. Also fish them on there peak times durning the spawn for Blue gill in Michigan it`s around june 5, and Crappie it`s a little later. much bigger fish. Have fun

yes i haven't got a chance to try pan fish but plenty of people say they like perch the best. u can caught them mainly with worms and some times with Small spinners. to use a worm use a hook and a bober. the best place to caught them is near the side mabe 10 feet out in brush or more shalower water and not so much in deep. there are more methods but it depends where u are fishing. pan fish are crappie, perch, bluegill, redear sunfieh, and one or two others.
and also fish for them on the bottem
good luck and have fun!!!
