Being a Christan does not give you a "free from pain" ticket. God has a reason for everything that happens to a person. It may not be clear at that moment, but there is a reason for everything that happens in life. God will never give you more than you can handle.

I have a chronic illness that causes physical pain, 24/7. I am also a grateful Christian that totally and completely loves God, and knows that He loves me- He loved me so much that He sent His Son to pay for my sins by dying on the cross. You ask me how? Because I know that My Redeemer lives, and I will see Him one day, and eternity without death and pain and tears is a lot longer than these years here on earth. In my pain, I have learned to trust God, because anything that I do everyday can only be done when He is doing it through me, otherwise I would not get out of bed in the morning. I have had some people tell me if I had more faith, God would heal- my faith believes that He could, but He hasn't for whatever reason- and since He is God, I surrender to that, I think it takes more faith to make it through the day, and glorify Him, while in pain, then living pain free. Paul, had a thorn in his flesh, and he asked God to remove it, and God would not. He said- "My grace is sufficient for you, My strength is made perfect in weakness."

Because God does not act as my celestial vending machine, I don't believe in HIM -what a logic-my reaction would be to be angry at HIm and kick and scream, but He certainly is the great I AM (whether I believe it or not!)!
We are free not to care about God, to turn our backs to Him, to hate HIM, disagree with HIM .He invites us to come and reason with HIM but our belief or unbelief does not affect Him, it affects us.
Much of all kind of pain is caused by disobedience to God.I DO NOT mean that the person suffering from pain was disobedient in any particular way, but say, she has a disease that was caused by an inherited condition that was caused by a mutation 400 years ago in someone -who maybe was mistreated and given polluted food or some other toxin due to someone else's disobedience. Now all descendants have that disease -thousands of people.
God made us responsible for our actions but also allows incredible freedom on all levels.
Do I deserve to be well -it depends on standards of conduct: according to God's standard: no lying, cheating, lazyness, greed, dirty thoughts, and doing unto others as I would want to be treated myself. I certainly don't deserve any health.
So -logically:if a loving God lets me go free of pain and my good friend not, He can't be loving and omnipotent because I do not have pain!?
No -that cannot be the basis, we have to see what the world around us shows, what does the Bible say - or the Quaran because that is the only other basic book about a monoteistic God-and then think.
If God is , He can answer our prayers-but He has the right to answer them any way He wants and sometimes getting off pain is not my primary need.
By the way, the other side of the coin, someone who lacks the ability to feel pain, is in VERY serious trouble -and that is the basic problem in leprosy.
BAsically the question touches religious thinking on many levels. I personally have experience of learning to trust God even if I don't understand. I love to understand -that is one of my passions, but God does not always tell me why or give an explanation in His love and as a Christian I need Christ to reconcile me with God -always.
A very good book about this question is written by Jerry Sittser: When God doesn't answer your prayer by Zondervan, He is not simplistic or give superficial answers and does not claim to know it all.
So these were some thoughts provoked by the question, the question as old as the mankind!

How can I believe in a loving God? Because He willingly went through the worst pain and humiliation possible - for my sins.
What good parent would not repremand their children when they have done something wrong? What good parent wouldn't sacrifice everything to help their child in need? What good parent wouldn't step aside at times and let their children "learn the hard way.?"
I often asked myself the very same question - why would a loving God allow suffering? This is not a question to be taken lightly or that can be answered in a short blog on Yahoo Answers.
I've known people who suffer greatly and yet are at peace and happy. How can this be if suffering is an ugly thing?
Why is it, that people who have been through a great trauma together are closer? How can people who have seen the worst and been through the worst still be happy?
If you really want to answer your question, then read everything you can about those who have suffered. Ask people who are suffering, religious and non-religious alike what they think. You might be surprised at what you hear.

I have a herniated disc, and arthritis. My body is an imperfect body. Like the second law of thermodynamics says, it will wear out. I am in constant pain.
God didn't make my body imperfect. This diseased/fallen world is to blame for that. God has provided for me abundantly. I am able to work (most of the time), I have a loving wife and friends, and truly believe that I'm heaven bound. I am a Christian therefore I have a positive outlook on life and that makes my life here and now pretty good.
Why is my life still good when I have pain every day? Because I KNOW God loves me.

In the Bible book of James chapter 1 verse 13 it says...
"When under trial, let no one say: "I am being tried by God." For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone."
A person in pain is not being tried by God. The pain is due to our own imperfections. To the contrary, God gives us a sure hope that our pain is temporary. It is by means of his Kingdom that all pain will be done away with...
"'[God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.' And the One seated on the throne said: 'Look! I am making all things new.' Also, he says: 'Write, because these words are faithful and true.'" Revelation, chapter 21, verse 4, 5.

Suffering entered into this world because of man's sinful disobedience to God, and God proved He is loving by sending Jesus to pay the penallty of your sin and mine.
This life will have pain and tribulation but God promises to those that love Him there will come a time when pain is no more.
I remind you Jesus went through a lot of pain He did not deserve to ransom you from sin and hell, and that is true love
1Pet4:19
Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator
and God uses painful experiences in our life to teach to depend on him and brings good out of the worst situations
Romans8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose

There are 3 people in this house that have constant pain. We all believe in God and we are all saved through faith in Jesus. He never promised us a perfect life. He just promised to be there for us. He promised to take care of us. He has. God is love and God is just. How do you know that is isn't Satan causing the pain. When we are going through times of trouble, that is when we lean on God more. So yes I believe in God even through the pain. I can talk to Him, and cry out to Him, and He hears me, and loves me.

Because I know that God enters into all things toi work His good. I trust him. So my slipped disk is painful, yet I still work, and I still do other things, but I know that at the end of this there will be no pain. I will come through this stronger than I was before.

Faith in God does not make this world any different it makes the person that has faith different. Having faith in God would make you less likely to feel mad at the world or blame others for your pain....People who have faith in God want to make the world a better place so the focus would not be on the pain it would be on" What can I do today to make someone else forget their pain...."
