"Being depressed" is just something people say they are, trying to describe their feeling. I think it usually means "I've been very sad for a while and don't feel like the end is in sight, and it's slowing me down." As you mention, depression is a medical condition, and it includes a number of physical symptoms, including feelings of persistent sadness, over a minimum period of time. That last part is the important part. I believe it is six months, prior to that it would just be "depressive symptoms." There is also dysthymic disorder, which is a lower grade depression, I am not certain but perhaps you wouldn't have to have symptoms quite as long.
If it worries you, see your doctor or chiropractor. :-)

depression can come from a certain feeling or emotion, but having depression is a type of chemical imbalance. and basically when your depressed usually it will go away, when you have the illness (depression) it is a long and on going thing and can be treated with medication or an alternate way. Depression can affect certain aspects of your everyday life. Just being depressed won't.

like u said, having depression is a disease caused by several factors including but not limited to difficulty engaging in regular daily activities over a period of time often accompanied or caused by hormonal imbalances. Being depressed can be thought of as something more temporary and i think this has less of a prolonged effect on regular life and relationships.

Generally, if someone has been depressed for more than two weeks, that person is regarded as suffering from depression, but there is a test for it at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris on page 2: depression treatments/resources.

Depresses is a couple of days that are stinky. When life is not what you want it to be. Depression is when you get overwhelmed with life. You can't get out of bed & even eating seems like too much to bother with. It will make your irritable with others & can lead to suicide without treatment.

You started to touch on it there: the actual medical condition is when it doesn't seem to go away, and starts to affect your everyday life in various ways. Being depressed, "at the moment" as you said is brought on by something just bringing you down, but then you work through it and everything goes back to normal.

In general, "being depressed" is just a lack of motivation. It's the sort of day that you just realy REALLY don't want to get out of bed. "Having depression" means having the whole medical sympotoms, usually but not limited to, lack of motivation, suicidal tendencies, violent tendencies, drug/alcohol abuse, ect.
