Jesus said to the crowd who had gathered to hear him: “Stop being anxious about your souls as to what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your bodies as to what you will wear. Does not the soul mean more than food and the body than clothing? Observe intently the birds of heaven, because they do not sow seed or reap or gather into storehouses; still your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they are? . . . So never be anxious and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or, ‘What are we to drink?’ or, ‘What are we to put on?’ For all these are the things the nations are eagerly pursuing. For your heavenly Father knows you need all these things. Keep on, then, seeking first the kingdom and his righteousness, and all these other things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:25-33) What do we learn from this?

Jesus was not implying that we should neglect taking care of our physical needs and those of our family members. “If anyone does not provide for those who are his own, and especially for those who are members of his household,” states the Bible, “he has disowned the faith and is worse than a person without faith.” However, Jesus promised that if we put first things first and give priority to spiritual matters, God will make sure that other needs are met. The lesson here is about setting priorities. Following this advice leads to happiness, for “happy are those conscious of their spiritual need.”

When followed, the Bible’s counsel results especially in spiritual blessings. (Proverbs 10:22) However, it brings other benefits. For example, God’s Word instructs Christians: “Let the stealer steal no more, but rather let him do hard work.” It also states that “the one working with a slack hand will be of little means, but the hand of the diligent one is what will make one rich.” Honest, hardworking Christians who follow this advice are often preferred as employees. This can be a blessing.

6:33 Seek ye first the kingdom of God. The promise is made that if we seek it first, and its righteousness, all earthly wants will be supplied. The condition demands, (1) That we seek the kingdom first in point of time. Some propose to secure a competence, and after they have gained it, they will serve God. (2) We must make it first in importance. Everything else must give way before its demands. (3) It must be first in our affections, have our whole hearts. We must love the Lord our God with the whole heart (Mt 22:37).
Can we really completely live up to our side of the bargin, if we don't
God sure enough doesn't have to either...

another way to look at it is ,,is our "desire" of our hearts specific...I WANT a sweet and pretty wife...or I WANT to feel loved and appritiated? Do I WANT french fries or do I WANT to be able to eat something today...Its all about the reality of the situation/personal wants

it is speaking of knowledge... knowledge is power... when we have knowledge and an understanding we know how to direct our lives. If we are putting good first and seeking His kingdom... our priorities are in order and decisions become easier to make. When we have a clear picture of what we want (if we are seeking the kingdom of God this would be our purpose)... and knowledge on how to obtain it worldly things become second in our desires. If we are doing the right things the Lord does bless us... and yes... with finding the right relationship or a job that will fill our needs... when you have this relationship with God you can feel the promptings of the spirit which will guide you to these things... of course it is implied that if you are seeking His righteousness the other things you are seeking would be good things... good job... good spouse... good lifestyle...

Dear srjione, The passage is basically teaching that we are to value God more than things. All these things can be different things for different people. God is desiring for people's hearts to be right with Him and he says the priority is God first, everything else 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. I don't understand how that priority is doing injustice to the poor- because the Bible also teaches much about God's heart for the poor. God protects, provides, and cares for the poor- and asks his followers to do the same. Hope that helps. Feel free to email if any clarification is required. Kindly, Nickster

What he talked about before the verse you are quoting. Jesus was talking about trusting God for the things that are needed in a day.

But first you have to have peace with God; so seek the kingdom first. Anyone cannot expect anything from God unless they have peace with him first.

The desires of your heart, dear. God will supply all you need if you put Him first every moment of every day for the rest of your life.
