You'll have to install a Linux distribution and follow the installation procedure. I would recommend Ubuntu (a fairly easy distro to install).

You would need to install Linux onto your hard drive. While you could format the hard drive and put in it place of Windows, most people who run it buy a second hard drive and install Linux on the drive. When it installs, it adds a menu during the boot up which allows you to decide whether to boot into Windows or Linux.

Safest option would be to get another hard drive. Obtain a copy of a Linux Distro and install it on the new hard drive. Then you can setup a dual boot system allowing you to boot to both Windows and Linux.
