Freehubs versus what?

If you mean freehubs vs. freewheel hubs, then it is because the bearings are placed farther out towards the ends of the axle providing more support. In addition there is less hub to rim offset when building the wheel.

If you mean freehubs vs. coaster wheels or fixed gear then one of the above answers will suffice.

If you don't have a freehub, you must pedal all the time. And it also means that if you stop peddaling, the wheels will keep rotating the cranks which would be dangerous.
