In the early years when I first got my Nashville Orange 6120 (October 1965) I used nothing but Gretsch mediums, flat-wounds. As time passed, Gretsch strings were difficult to find so I reverted to different brands. On 10 May 2004 I installed a custom gauge set of Ernie Ball's--"Not Even Slinky" mediums and they are still on the guitar. While I don't play that electric as much as I did during my performing days, it continues to play well and sound sharp and crisp.

That type of string makes jazz chords and country leads exceptionally striking.

Gretsch electrics have a sound unique to the guitar world.

Some Ibanez Artcores or some Epiphones like the Wildcat and ES-295 are other options that are nice and have Bigsby Vibratos on them. But yeah, I'm saving my money for a Gretsch Country Club. Sadly it looks as though I'll need a new bass before then though...

I recommend either GHS or Ernie Ball. As far as gauge goes, that's kind of personal preference. Ideally, you'd want a medium gauge on a hollow body.
