They contain mercury which will end up poisoning the environment. All those bulbs will end up in landfills and the mercury will seep into the land and ground water.

In addition to the mentioned mercury deal, some people get headaches from fluorescent bulbs because they sort of flicker at 60hz.

I don't buy them for the environment (whether they're better or worse, who knows) and I don't get the headaches... I use them.

You can't use them with "dimmers", they are ugly and they can fit only a small number of fixtures. Can you imagine a big chantellie (sp?) with CFLs? However, they are great as long as you don't have to see them and if they fit.
