King Henry VIII rebelled against the Pope because the Pope would not let him divorce Katherine of Aragon. Henry had no male children at that point and they needed a male Heir to the Throne.
The Pope excummunicated Henry so Henry made himself head of the Chatholic Church in England.
The other name for the Anglican Church is the English Catholic Church (Church of England) as opposed to the Roman Catholic Church. Almost all the rituals are the same except the English have their King or Queen as the actual head of the Church the person who runs it is the Archbishop of Canterbury.
I hope this helps a bit.

Anglicanism is the Church of England's international church communion based on the Lambeth/Chicago Quadrilateral of historic episcopate(bishops 'or episcopal church structure),Bible( and the other "legs of the stool":Apostolic Tradition and Reason or Natural Law), the 3 Creeds(Nicene,Apostles' and Athanasian) and the first 4 Ecumenical Councils(Nicea, Constantinople I,Ephesus I Chalcedon )and a liturgy based on the Prayerbooks authorized by a recognized Anglican .
Church
There is great latitude doctrinally in the Anglican Communion. The 39 Articles are at least nominally upheld but they can be interpreted very differently by different "parties of Churchmanship" from Anglo-Catholic to Evangelical Protestant to "Anglo Baptist" to "AngloUnitatian" to "EpiscoPagan". There are Churches of the Anglican Tradition that are not in fellowship with the Archbishop of Canterbury. There are even Anglican Use Roman Catholics and members of the Orthodox Churches who use Anglican Liturgy.
There may be a big split in Anglicanism over moral issues and issues of Biblical authority coming soon. The largest Anglican Churches are in Africa. Anglican Churches were planted throughout the British Empire and beyond
Henry 8 separated the Church of England from the (Papal) Catholic Church and Ed 6 and Elizabeth 1 Protestantized it. The Queen of England is the Supreme Govenor of the Church of England but she has no authority over the other Anglican Churches outside of Britain.

Henry VIII was upset because the Pope wouldn't let him divorce his wife of more than 20 years. Henry and Catherine had six children together of which only the oldest daughter survived. Henry wanted to try his luck with another woman.
Henry divorced Catherine, the Pope excommunicated him, he traveled to Rome and begged on his knees, in the snow for three day to be forgiven. The Pope forgave him. Henry went home and soon decided that he still wanted a divorce. He declared himself to be the ruler of the church in England and the Anglican denomination was born. Henry granted himself a divorce. Then he got married another five times. Two of his wives lost their heads, one died of a post-childbirth infection. He was a nasty guy.

It is the state religion of England, whom The Queen Elizabeth II is protector of. The Catholics overstepped their bounds back in the 16th Century and Henry VIII basically said to hell with them and created his own branch of Christianity.

I think when Henry VIII was excommunicated for wanting a divorce (and other stuff), he started his own religion that allowed it (and other stuff.)
It's still lame.
