Why does it threaten people to have their religion questioned or opposed? Do they think that if too many people jump ship, they will have to re-examine, or is it a bandwagon thing? I am looking for rational respectful answers.

How do we believe ANYTHING? And why do we believe it?

What if someone told you that they had been to China, but you had no proof either way that they were telling the truth? You could first examine the evidence. If you found any, you must then decide what is verifiable. After all, evidence can be faked. If you did not find any evidence as to the veracity of their statement, you are then faced with two options. You could either choose to believe them or to not believe them. It's really as simple as that. Either way, you have just as much chance of being right as not.

For statements that require proof where there is none, the person who believes it to be true is just as apt to be correct about their assumption as the person who believes it to be untrue.

At this point, both the believer and the nonbeliever have a lot in common. Each is perfectly convinced that they are right. Neither has actual proof that they are. Both have complete faith in their position.

Does all of this sound familiar? It should because this is the position of believers vs. nonbelievers (of God's existence). Neither side can claim any particular superiority to the other. Each has the exact same statistical advantage of being right. It takes just as much faith to believe that God does not exist as it takes to believe that He does. Maybe more.

So there you have it , all the name calling, posturing, and vilifying will not change the fact that God cannot be proven or disproven. And YOU make the choice whether you want to believe or not, but that does not make you right.

Believers don't have a problem with that- because their eyes are fully open to the plight of all mankind. That is our faith. We believe even when we know that we can absolutely be wrong.

The worship of God is much to important. I must be certain that I am worshipping in the way that God wants me to, not according to my own desires or traditions of men. I accept the Bible as the word of God and study it carefully to be certain that the way I worship is "with spirit and truth" (John 4:23) I do not feel threatened by people who question or oppose my religion. If they are reasonable and respectful I will share with them why I believe the way I do. They may or may not agree but that does not have any bearing on my beliefs.

It doesnt threaten me. When I was younger, I was raised in a pentecostal church and most of my life all I heard was fire and brimstone sermons. I was basically taught that God was just waiting for me to mess up so he could strike me down. That is the reason I left the church. Then one day I heard a sermon about God's love and was amazed. I have since attended many churches and the most important thing I've heard a pastor say is not to take his word for it, but to read the scriptures for myself. I dont currently belong to a "religion", I belong to God and I try everyday to live my life by following Christ's teachings.

My answer is to ask you a question.. Why would you come to a religious web site and find it strange that people tell you about their faith? Sort of strange don't you think? Go ahead and challenge me, just don't be surprised if I give you an answer based in my faith... Jim

good point, I am a Christian but in the last few years I have been studying Hebrew and Greek the bible takes on a whole new life when you study it in its original text. The church I was brought up in was way off the mark.

I think some people don't believe they can question what they've been taught. I also believe that some fear to question because they've been told that pretty much everything will send them to hell.

well the logical answer is that people don't like to change even if their shown that their religion is wrong, they'll stick with it, look at the catholics the church is riddled with phedophils & they WANT TO BELIEVE in their church humans have a NEED to worship something, remember we were created in God's (moral) image

I don't know why. I'm catholic, I do not agree with EVERYTHING the church says, but they do say thats okay. I dont think anyone is a true believer until they really question their faith.

Well for example take the Bible

It's considered the word of God. God can't be wrong, so therefore everything in it is correct.

See that's the pit it falls into.
