We have a completely solar house at a state University near my house. It is cool with a capital C. I have a couple of friends with solar hot water heaters, & one has solar & a backup powered home.
Mostly I know right now it is not very affordable to install & systems need backup energy system. I think more work needs to be done to bring them to the average home.

After checking it out on the net, I found that the start up costs are very high. Even with the Federal and State tax credits it will cost more than your current electric bill for the ten years. Check your local power company's website and see what they will pay for your excess power production and then compare it against the rate for power you are buying from them. It is a rip off when you compare it to solar system start up costs.
