Back in the early days of the nation, a large proportion of the state's population were farmers. Thus, state representatives thought it would be fair for everyone to have the state capital in the geographical center of the state. Keep in mind that back in the day, people didn't have cars or airplanes, so travel times were measured in days not hours.

All state capitals are situated in the MIDDLE of the state, this is why Philadelphia isnt the capital of Pennsylvania (also used to be the capital of the country for 10 years) , because Pennsylvania is more to the lower right of the state, and Harrisburg is more central.
New York City is basically an island on the lower side of the state. Albany is just a centerpoint in New York.

NYC has enough without being the capital. There are too many people and it's too crowded. Also Albany has a better location. It's on the Hudson, which was extremely important in the settlers' times. NYC was once the capital of the United
States so it couldn't have been capital of NYS as well.

It seems at times that the world is moving to the NYC Metro area, meaning NYC, Long Island Westchester, and a few other upstate counties, Fairfield County and Bridgeport in Connecticut and Northern and Central New Jersey makes up the NYC Metro area. That's 22 million people. If NYC was the capital of NYS, the whole state would tip over because it would be totally unbalanced.

Because NYC used to be the capital of the country, before they moved to Washington DC, and it wouldn't be in the best interest of the state to have the capital be the same capital as the country for the sake of interstate relationships.

First of all, Albany does not suck. I love it there.
Second of all, I think it has something to do with the fact that most state capitals are in the middle of the state because transportation sucked back in the horse and carriage days.

You've got a point there. I'll have to research why Albany was chosen.
