While the high price of bail leads you to believe that he has committed a very serious crime, it could also mean that they think he is a flight risk. If he is from another country or has the means to leave this country, they will set his bail very high to keep him here.

Where I live, there is a web site that you can look at to tell you why someone was arrested. You could also try to call the central booking office at your jail and they should be able to tell you. It is all public record so they can tell you.

The nature of the offense is only one factor is setting bail. The purpose of bail is to ensure the person appears in court. An amount sufficient to guarantee someone in my financial position appeared would be pocket change for someone like Bill Gates. That said. 1/2 a million is enough to indicate the state takes his case seriously.

Made a mistake on his tax return. Happens all the time. Study hard in your arithmetic class so it doesn't happen to you!

Joking aside, your grandfather might have threatened a rich man, a public official, or a minority person, who called the police and asked them to press assault charges. The police will act when the "victim" is rich or a minority person or a government official. (They probably don't care about you, though.)

He might have walked out of a store forgetting to pay for something.

He might have written a bad check. (Arithmetic comes in handy for checkbook balancing too.)

He might have had a small car accident, thought it was nothing serious, and left the scene.

Maybe he got into a fight with a minority person and made the mistake of winning. If a minority person picks a fight with you, and you're White, you got to let him win. If you beat him up, he'll call the police and start telling them lies about why the fight got started.

The size of the bail is unusual for a small crime (called a "misdemeanor") unless your grandfather is suspected of having unpopular views about minority races. There's a man in Maryland who was arrested for a misdemeanor and had his bail set at $2,000,000. Why? He had been described as a "racist" in the press. (Look up Archie Wheeler on the web.)

Ask your parents or your grandmother what's really going on. All we can do is speculate. We might be wrong.

In Cali, I haven't seen a bond that high. Hell, I had a guy the other day, for meth possession, possession of 2 loaded handguns, marijuana cultivation (198 plants) and something else and his was only like $60,000.

That is one seroius felony.
