The most practical car for a college student would be a compact hatchback. Easy to park, good cargo room, good gas mileage, and relatively inexpensive to buy and maintain.
You didn't mention your budget, but I would recommend buying used, so that precludes some of the newer hatches (Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Toyota Yaris).
Some used recommendations:
- Ford Focus (hatchback or wagon)
- Hyundai Elantra (there's a hatch version, though not as common as the sedan)
- Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe (this is the same car, co-developed by Toyota and GM, just with different exteriors)
- Scion xA or xB (may not find many used out there as it's only a couple years old)

I can not help you on the insurance, but if I may suggest take a look at used 2006 Ford Taurus they are out there at less than $14000.00 with mileage less than 15000 miles. They run great
I have had two older ones good for over 150,000 miles with good maintenance. the 6"s with 12 valves get good gas mileage and good all around automobile. and go like hell. I drive one for work with 8 other drivers who also drive it 87,000 miles and still going.

General Motors- Pontiac Grand Am, Chevy Cavalier, Buicks.
They're pretty good cars. Stay away from the Pontiac Vibe. It's just a Toyota underneath.
State Farm treats me pretty well.

Well I am not sure what kind of car........but insurance can be different depending on where you are. Call around for quotes. They are free. With the price of gas going up.....you would be better off with a horse.......or a small motorcycle. ;)

I love Chevy. If you want a sports car the Corvette. If you want a small sedan the Chevy Aveo or Aveo5, it gets good miles to the gallon. If you have a lot of kids get the Chevy Suburban or the Tahoe, but they suck a lot of gas. The Chevy TrailBlazer is good, it doesn't suck a whole lot of gas. Those are all good cars.

I like hondas-they're good cars, hardly have any problems, good gas mileage. If you get a honda-always use synthetic 5w-30 oil and you'll rarely run into any problems. I like Nationwide Insurance-never have any problems with them.

An American type is the best one, is easier to find parts if you need them, I like Ford the only thing is the Ford cars don't like the cold!!! lol..Don't get a Mustang it will eat gas.....I have one.....lol.
How the gas is you need something small, so you wont spent so much in gas.
