Jerusalem's Holy Sepulcre and Calvary are Christianity's holiest places because Jesus,God made Man,died and rose for us there in Jerusalem. Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity is the traditional site of Jesus birth and also a holy place. Honoring these and other sites emphasizes our foundation of faith that Jesus actually existed and exists forever and that He entered history and had a material body and real history.
There are many other places that underline Christian history and witness such as burial places of heroes of the Faith. St Peter's in Rome is an example.
Many Christians go on pilgrimage to meaningful sites. The most important pilgrimage is to the holy place of Jesus in one's heart and life.
