Well, honestly, I have been to quite a few themed weddings, and if not done properly, they look tacky. Either the couple/planner puts way too many themed details in it or not enough at all where it looks empty. One wedding that stuck out to me the most was a fairy tale themed wedding. It was done beautifully. The bride arrived at the ceremony site in a horse and carriage, and it was an outdoors wedding during spring. The flowers were all pastel colored, with lots of diamond and sparkle accents. It was very formal, and the groom even wore a vintage type suit. The favors were glass slippers (Cinderella). It was beautiful because the pictures still look classy and the theme was not overdone.

I'm not a big fan of wedding themes, I tend to think that "getting married" is enough of a theme on it's own. I do like weddings that have a cohesive "scheme", like a beautiful color combination, or a "motif" such as a monogram, or perhaps a symbol they use in their favors, invitations, etc. I find overly themed weddings kind of distasteful for such a formal event. My theory is, if they bride and groom plan to come dressed as Star Trek characters, or want the guests to wear a period costume, it's probably best to save that for a Halloween party. Themed weddings have a tendency to turn caricature-like very quickly. If your certain you can use a restrained hand, I think it's OK to incorporate the likes and dislikes of the bride and groom. For example, i like the idea that if the groom like NASCAR or something like that, they do a small grooms cake with that theme. If they had NASCAR flags all over the place, with NASCAR invitations, and NASCAR favors etc, etc, I think that would come off as way tacky. It's all about personal touches in a wedding, not hitting your guests over the head with a theme. Good luck!

My wedding theme was fiesta but I guess you could say it was more of a style than a theme because I am Mexican and we wanted to do the festive colors and food of my culture. A theme can also be a certain color running throughout the wedding such as lavender or blue. I guess the weirdest one I've heard of was Star Trek done aboard a mock spaceship. If it worked for them that's fine, it just seemed odd to me.

My sister was getting married in October, we did a "Fall In Love" theme. The girls wore a burnt orange and the centerpieces were clay pots with flowers with silk leaves strewn about. The favors were flower seeds in little coin envelopes. It was very cute.
My wedding was golf themed, my husband is a big golfer, so we did wooden rectangle boxes (that we build ourselves), grew grass and added gerber daisies sticking out of the grass, and topped it off with a "golf flag" stated Hole 1 thru 18. Even our invitations reflected the golf theme with the wording. It was fun and everyone loved it!

My parents own a lot of land so we are getting married there. It is a picnic/brunch spring type theme if that makes sense to you....I guess Garden Party if you will. All the magazines have ideas for this type wedding and I have the mags from two years ago...It's easy and fairly cheap. Good luck with YOUR wedding ;)

I really don't care for "themes" for weddings, but here are a few I've seen that I really liked:
-Beach theme; this is an obvious one, especially if you're getting married in the summer! Turquoise/aqua blue, seashells, sand in vases, etc etc...
-Fall theme; oranges/reds, lots of flowers with those colours, maybe sprinkle red/orange leaves around the tables...
-Asian theme; this could be neat with lanterns, etc.

http://weddingcheatsheet.blogspot.com/ this site has wedding themes explained nicely. If you have the wedding invitations and reception/church decorations with same theme it all looks coordinated and not thrown together not making any sense or thought to the big event - it is the once in a lifetime big event hopefully, right?

I think it should have a normal theme and shouldn't have anything crazy like in Las Vegas chapels! You could a wedding at the beach, or someplace different, though.

We're having a big band / jazz theme. That is the music that were playing and for the centerpieces, they're giant martini glasses.
