if you use a ceramic straightener and a good conditioner, your hair stays just fine. just make sure your hair is completely dry when you straighten.

Well, it all depends on what kind of straightening you are talking about. A chemical straightener is harmful, becuse what it idoes is changes the composition of the hair, making it thinner, stripping its outter layers while straightening it. Of course, nowadays there are no lye straighteners, and using a mild or botanical straightener (like Revlon's Botanicals) lessens the harmful effects a chemical straightener has on the hair shaft. Of course, if your hair isn't extremely curly or kinky, it would be pointless for you to use a chemical straightener.

The other way to straighten curly hair is a hot iron or a flat iron. If you want the best, look for an ionic, ceramic straightener, it works best with the hair, making it shiny, and retaining moisture... if you do go this route, however, remember that you MUST use some sort of gloss product (I recommend Loreal VIVE Straight Serum [you can get it at most drugstores or Walmart] or Swarzkopf serum [that you can purchase from a salon supplies store]) before and after blow drying, right before styling with a hot tool, or else your hair will get very dry and it will break. If you do not own one, the best ones are the Isinis and Babylis brands. DO NOT buy one from a mainstream drug store, go to a beauty supply store for this.

Now, if none of these are available to you, what you can do is use a straightening serum while blowdrying. Use a blowdryer with a diffuser, and a boar bristled brush.

I hope this helps!

I am now 36 but up until 2 1/2 yrs ago I had puffy curly hair. Now being summer time I wash and condition in the morning and then apply a leave in straightener (I like Mark Anthony from CVS, like a cream comes in a tube) and put it up in a clip. When my hair is dry I let it out of the clip and although not completely straight I am left with really manageable waves and it always amazes me how long my hair is without all of that curl. In the winter or when in a hurry I use a ceramic straightener and my hair does need extra conditioning.
Good luck!

I have extremly curly and frizzy hair and I know exactly what you are going through. idk why your mom won't let you straighten it, but whatever. Anything damages your hair, even brushing it! If you decide to use a straightener, the best one is the Remington Wet 2 Straight. It gets really hot, perfect for puffy hair. Also, use the right products. Matrix has a really good product line called "Sleek Look", its an orange bottle. It moisturizes hair and protects it when you do straighten it. Also, use a serum to help sleek your hair down after it's straight. Just make sure when you straighten your hair to make sure there are no knots and that you seperate it into sections. You will look so good! Convince your mom, thats what hair cuts are for, to take off damaged hair! Good Luck

Yes straightening does damage your hair. But as long as you keep your hair protected using a heat protection cream, and its on low level, I think its fine. I don't think they're is any other ways except for that and chemically straightening your hair which can be done at a hair salon.

Unfortunately your mom is right, straightening, dying and perms will damage your hair. There are products at your local Walmart that help to straighten curls,gels,mousses,leave-in stuff, shampoo&conditioner even.It might help to try to blow dry your hair as straight as possible then apply some product. But speaking as someone with curly hair,I try to go with it.When I wash my hair and towel it dry,I put in Sebastion's Potion #9. It keeps my hair from frizzing and feels good too. I put it in,hang my hair down and scrunch it.You can find Potion#9 at Fred Meyer.Good luck.

yes straightening your hair will damage your hair...but not if you use a thermal product...you spray your hair with it right before you use the straightening iron to it...it acts as a shield to protect the heat from your hair...tell your mom about this product and ask if you can try it...almost all salon brands carry one...make sure you spend money on a good brand
