With cats being complex creatures, there can be many reasons from illness to territorial issues. See the link below which will give you lots of different reasons why cats stop using their litter tray and how to solve the problem.

Sometimes cats will "miss" and poop over the side, in which case you can get a covered cat box. They will poop elsewhere if the litter gets too dirty or smells. Female cats will often not use the same litterbox as a male cat because of the male's scent. Some cats will not use a litterbox if it is not in a private location or if it is in too confined of a space.
Vets usually have behavior modification pamphlets with information on how to stop your cat from doing this.

Cats are very clean animals. They probably pooped outside the box because it needs to be cleaned or scooped. Also, they might have been mad at something you did.
Clean out all the litter, wash the inside basin with dish soap- clean out very well and put fresh litter in it.. that always seems to do the trick for me.
Good luck!

There could be a number of reasons.
It might not be litter trained.
The box could be dirty and it goes to the cleanest place near it.
The box might not be somewhere private and quiet. I have a cat who needs absolute peace and quiet when doing her duty. If we walk on by and she's inside, she'll jump right out even if she's in the middle of doing her duty.
The animal could be sick and going where it pleases instead of going to the litter box.

It's their ever-so-subtle way of letting you know that they disapprove of the situation.
Maybe you're not cleaning it out enough.
Maybe they don't like where the litterbox is. (It needs to be far away from their food and water.)
Maybe they don't like the brand of litter.
Maybe they just hate you. Cats are funny like that.

Yes, they can! If that happens, please just scoop it up. It usually happens in an emergency.
