I think of the pharisees, whose practices were backward. They follow fundamentals, but their belief has lost its heart.

What a great example of a "direct and respectful" question. Not a term I would use in a mixed gathering. My challanges with 'fundamental, evangelical Christianity" are that 1) I believe the Bible to be a mythological history 2) I believe that all paths lead to God and 3) I believe that evangelism is more meaningful by works than by words.
I am more than comfortable putting my beliefs out there, when they are met with hostility and threats (which is not something I have ever seen you do dear Ramjet - thank you) it is human nature to get defensive. In our society there seems to be a widespread acceptance of the axiom that the best defense is a good offense.

those that say that:
that statement is almost an oxymoron.
Fundamentalist understand what is Truth and Morality. They read and fully understand what the bible and the constitution says. They think about the brutality of a baby being aborted and the mother who will probably suffer from the "procedure."
They understand when a woman is stripped of all her rights and left to die a gruesome death (no trial & and forced to die a death the most wicked prisoners will never face).I am a Right-wing christian conservative independent:
Romans 10
To say you have to be a 100% tolerant PC person that hates fundies and christians (what?).

I think it would describe someone who, in the name of religion, believed in things that are very obviously untrue, e.g. the earth is flat, the creation was done in 6x24hrs, men should keep their wives in abject submissiveness, etc. There are scriptures you can wrench into support of all of these and plenty more beliefs, and some do it in ignorance--others in a sort of dishonesty: not understanding something themselves, they take up God's defence using any and all arguments they can think of regardless of whether they are true or whether they fit. Incidentally, the Bible book of Job has some things to say about people who speak dishonestly in God's defence.

Basically I think it is meant to be a derogatory term to refer to Fundamentalist Christians who are uneducated in general...
oxox
EDIT: My definition of uneducated is not so much how much you learnt at school, or what degree you got in uni. It's more of your willingness to be open to new ideas and oppinions and then letting all that knowledge influence what you say and do not just what people have taught you from a book :)

A fundamentalist is a person that follows his religion to the letter.
Anyone that claims to be religious should, therefore, be a fundie. If they're not, then they are hypocrites.
I am proud to be a fundie Atheist.

A person who wishes to not learn anything new, even with proof staring them in the face, because it goes against their narrow minded literal interpretation of a 2000 year old book written by men who desired to control the masses through fear.

Well, it's a phrase I'd avoid using in principle. However, technically I would view it as someone who follows a particular doctrine based on what he/she is told by others rather than by personal examination. I would also apply it to those who arbitrarily condemn anyone who isn't of their particular persuasion.

To me, it is someone who preaches on and on about their beliefs and has no tolerance for listening to other points of views, they only want to shove what they believe down your throat so that it validates them somehow.
You see a lot of these on Y!A
