I have a lot of weight to lose. Seventy-three pounds just to reach a healthy weight. So I want to make sure that I eat healthier, consume the right amount of calories, etc..most importantly, I know that this weight will never come off without getting off of my computer chair and burning some major calories. I also know that I have to burn more than I consume. However, do I factor in what I burn naturally without exercise or do I have to burn more than 1,400 calories a day through exercise? What would be the correct amount of calories to burn through exercise for me?

body burns 50cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) and thats 1200cal/day - for people under 150lbs. people above 150lbs need 70cal/hour.
to lose weight you have to do cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min and combine it with light weight training.
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

No, part of the calories will be burned by routine processes like breathing, heart pumping blood, walking, etc. Be warned, 1400 is not enough calories and your body will go into starvation mode and you will gain weight. I would raise it to 2000 in a proper diet and work out enough to burn 500-600 calories. You might ask, well, isn't it the same? No, because that energy that you burn through exercise will help your metabolism go faster and you will lose fat while gaining muscle (which weighs more than fat, but is not unhealthy). I suggest, you start with 20 min of cardio (light jog) 4-5 times a day. I am no expert and my advice should not be considered definitive or authoritarian, it's just stuff I've read in magazines, so before you go on any diet and/or exercise program consult a doctor. It sounds silly, but a doctor will be able to give you expert guidance in order to effectively lose fat (as you lose fat your weight will go down, don't worry).

CS, 1,400 calories is the amount you need to burn off in TOTAL--just sitting in your computer chair, you are burning some off! Your body uses up calories breathing, moving, replacing cells, digesting calories, etc.
If you're able, I'd talk to a doctor or a dietician to figure out how many calories are appropriate for you to aim for burning every day, as well as how many and in what form to consume them. Extremely rapid weight loss can be unhealthy--even unsafe. And if you're out of shape, it's going to be easier, and you're likely to be able to stick with a plan, if you start your exercise slowly--walk for a couple of weeks before you try jogging; jog before you run.
Some people find that making the financial commitment of joining a gym is good incentive, but some people find they don't use it, and it becomes just something else to feel guilty about--and fuel emotional eating. Many gyms do their best business around New Year's, and aren't selling as many memberships in the summer, so you can sometimes find special offers--try 3 months without a contract, etc. I joined a gym for women only, because I didn't want to worry about going on 'bad hair days' etc.
You sound well motivated and sensible--good luck and stay with it!

There are plenty of calculator/tools to see how many calories you need to consume in a day to maintain a healthy weight. Once you have figured out how many calories YOU need to maintain your weight, cut that down by 250-500. After you cut down on your food intake, be sure to burn off a few hundred more by exercising.

DO NOT try to burn 1,400 calories a day through exercise, as that will hurt you.

Good luck!

No, you don't need to burn 1400 calories to equal daily intake. Your body burns calories just by simply being alive and performing its necessary tasks. Do a search for a "BMR calculator" and you will see how much your body generally burns in a day, and how much you need to lose weight.
