Diet and exercise. Just eat 3 healthy meals a day, drink loads of water, and aim to exercise at least 3 times a week (walking is best).

Don't be tempted by faddy 'supplement' diets - as soon as you start to eat again, the weight piles back on.

If you lose (on average) 1-2lbs per week, it will probably take you about 18 months.

Best of luck.

Hey good luck on starting your weight loss journey - YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I think that the only true way to lose weight is making sure you eat lots of veg (this is handy as you can bulk out your portions), exercise at least 3 times a week and just watch what you eat.

You must be committed to this for the rest of your life so don't be too harsh on yourself just make healthy choices - the weight may come off slower but you will find that there is more chance that it will stay off!

If you lose 2lb a week to lost 7 stone will take approx: 49 weeks. But obviously some weeks you may find you lose more/less but use that as a target.

Also keep a food diary...I use www.nutracheck.co.uk and it's surprising how I under estimated my calorie intake!!

Best of Luck!!

I lost 92 pounds in 3 years and that is without any exercise at all as I am disabled. Throw away your large plates! I only have a saucer now and have become used to the smaller portions. Don't cut out treats altogether cos if you do you will crave them and fall off your diet straight away. Cut out sweet drinks - replace with diet if you have to. Be careful of having too many foods with aspartame in (artificial sweetener) it can really upset your tummy (take that from an expert)! I usually have porridge for breakfast, then at lunch time make a fruit smoothie with low fat yoghurt and skimmed milk, and as it's easier for me at tea time I have a weightwatchers meal, but you may prefer to do something different. If I get the munchies I have some slimfast pretzels or a cereal bar. Just don't be disheartened when you suddenly don't seem to be losing anything. Your body occasionally has to adjust and it may seem strange even though you have stuck to it. Remember that usually in the first week of any diet you will lose a large amount but most of it is water and not actual fat.

Lossing weight is like putting it on a slow process in fact they say the slower the better as you will keep it of, I have just lost 4 stone over the year eating more healthily. I have not been well enought to do much exercise but I hope to increase that now I am getting lighter, A couple months ago I had a gastric bypass op adn I am lossing weight faster now but would not recommend it. You stick to the healthy diet and dont worry if you cheat tomorrow is always another day

Someone I know just lost 3 stone, it took 3 months. So lets say 7 months as a minimum. He cut out bread, milk & sugar in drinks and all snacks. He also exercised careful portion control, it is easy to over eat if you have a big plateful - because you usually want to finish up whatever you've got. This was with some gentle exercise each week but nothing horrific. Only diet drinks, no snacking and 3 regular, but not large meals, a day EVERY day - no skipping. That way you gradually reduce your appetite but do not feel too miserable. bear in mind that you can eat just about as much veg as you like, filling up on salad/veg part of the meal before starting on meat/protein/ carbs might help too.
Might be worth consulting your doctor to check that you have set yourself a reasonable target and that you won't be doing yourself any harm with your weight loss.

Good luck with it!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Amazing how few sensible answers you have received!

Diet & Exercise are key, though you want to start off with gentle exercise and gradually increase it. Diet may be a little trickier, eating less junk food and more fruit and vegetables is simple.

As for the time taken, well that would depend on a lot of factors, but if you set yourself small targets their will bemore sense of successwhich will encourage you to continue.

The other thing I would seriously recomend is getting your metabolic type tested so you can work out what protien/carb balance you need and which food types are good/bad for you.

You can get a really good book about metabolic typing from amazon.

Go to a gym. They will induct you and give you diet advice. You can't do it without exercise at some point. Gyms are scary but once you've been a couple of times it ok. The staff will help you
