What does the saying "spare the rod spoil the child mean"?

Everyone has answered it. It means that you have to give discipline and boundaries when raising your child. It does not literally mean that you have to spank them. It just means that without consequences for their actions they will be little brats.

Without discipline, you are creating a very spoiled individual.

Sparing the rod could be taken literaly that you should not be afraid to strike the child to develop good discipline or figuratively where you may use the symbol of the rod to mean verbal discipline.

It means that if you don't discipline your child that he will become spoiled.
In some cases, this is advocacy for not spanking or whatevering your kids, but I think it means more that if you do spare the rod, not discipline your kids for something they do wrong, that the kid will become spoiled.

It's of course from the book of Proverbs in the Bible. It explains the result of failing to discipline a child.

it means that if you don't treat your children with strict discipline, they will get spoiled. (think of the rod as a paddle to swat their bottoms.) not that i advocate this...
