A few decent options in Fort Lauderdale include Las Olas Blvd which has quite a few nice shops and restaurants. Just tell your taxi driver you want to head to the shopping district on Las Olas. A little further away is the Galleria at Fort Lauderdale on Sunrise Blvd which is a very upscale shopping mall. Both aren't too far away from the airport.
Approximately 30 to 40 minutes away from the airport is Sawgrass Mills Mall, which is one of the largest outlet malls in the US. Taking into account security and other issues at the airport, plus travel time you would probably get about 4 hours at the mall.
I would strongly recommend against headed to Miami, or Miami Beach (South Beach). Traffic can make this trip very challenging, on a good day it could take 40 minutes on a bad day, well over an hour.
