you could try frank sutcliff, who did early photography in and around Whitby....the photo s have been a great source of inspiration(with permission) for both me and my wife we are both artist me a painter she a graphic realist

Dorothea Lang. She did this amazing collection of photographs and put it together in a book called The Family of Man, it's got some incredible shots in it, particularly about the era of the Great Depression in the 1930s.

For the later 20th century, you could look at both Nan Golden and Martin Parr, in fact there is a great article on Martin Parr's work in the UK edition of Marie Claire for June.

You could look at Dorothea Lange She was hired by the usa to go around photographing farmers and families. Her images were important in the fact that so many were starving because the siol turned to dust there were no boundries to mark out the farms just miles and miles of dry open fields that would grow nothing. the goverment were made to help these people
