Out of all the family owned pets, horses, snakes, rodents, cats, dogs, birds, etc. Wouldn't it be something if they too were put to sleep for aggressive behavior? I mean, what happens when a parrot bites your finger and it is nearly taken off? Or when a rat nips your hand, and draws some blood? How about a boa or python that struggles to take down a domestic cat, dog, or even a child? A cat whom scratches at a child for pulling on it's tail? A horse whom trampled or kicked someone?
And then there are dogs, mans best friend, bred for loyalty, devotion, companionship, friendlyness, family guardians, and the love we've been searching for in human friendship, but cease to get, why are they so hurridly blamed for the ignorance of people, why should they suffer their owners stupidity? Why can't it be recognized?
Stop BSL....

Great point, I agree 100%! It is all on the owner! Alot of people will say that it isnt all the owner, they will say that some dogs are born mean.... I dont believe that any dog is born mean, I believe that it is made mean either by what the owner has done to it or by what the owner has not done for it! But, even if the dog was born mean, its still all on the owner!.. First of all, I believe that you shouldnt get a dog that you wouldnt be able to control at all times! No matter how well trained your dog is, there is always the posibility that it could want to go after someone or something one day and if you wouldnt be able to control the dog, thats not a breed that you should own! It is the owners responsiblity to properly train and socalized their dog. It is the owners responsiblity to have their dog under control at all times! No dog, no matter what breed, how well behavied or how nice the dog is, should ever be outside with out being in a fence or without having a leash on! If the dog doesnt like people, animals or both, that is fine but, the owner needs to know their dog and know how to control their dog! Its the owners responsiblity make sure that their dog is safe and everyone around their dog is safe! If the dog is a mean dog, it shouldnt be in a situation where anyone or anything can get hurt! If the dog does end up hurting someone thats not the dogs fault! Dogs are animals and they will always act like animals! The owner chose to get that dog so it is their responsibility to do what a responsible, respectful owner has to do! If a dog attacks a person or another animal the owner should be held resopsible and should be properly punished! If they were doing what a responsible, respectful owner has to do their dog wouldnt have attacked anyone! If they had their dog under control their dog wouldnt have attacked anyone! If that person cant control their dog and be a responsile, respectful owner, they should be punsihed and shouldnt be allowd to own a dog! Banning a breed wont do anything! There will still be bad people. There will still be irresponsible, disrespectful owners and they will just move on to another breed! I have said this before and I am sure I will say again but, banning a whole breed or even 50 whole breeds will do nothing but cause a false sense of security and break the heart of all of the good owners that will have their good dogs taken away simply because of their breed! The owners need to be held responsible because they are responsible for their dog! Untill people open their eyes and see that, nothing will change! Instead of banning breeds, we need to do thing like...
-Put a stop to leash law violations...Higher penalties for owners who violate the leash law will dissuade more people from slacking on their duties to contain their dog
-Strengthen and enforce penalties for dangerous owners (and their dangerous dogs)
-Crack down on dog fighting
-Strengthen animal abuse laws
-Prevent criminals from owning dogs...The following people should not be allowed to own dogs: drug dealers, human or animal abusers, and anyone convicted of a violent offense (assault, rape, robbery, etc.)
-Regulate breeders
-Fund public spay/neuter initiatives...These programs are important, especially low-cost ones. Unneutered dogs, particularly males, are far more likely to attack a human than either neutered males or spayed females.
-Educate about dog behavior (http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/dog_care/stay_dog_bite_free/)
-Encourage responsible dog ownership
-Provide low-cost obedience training classes and behavior help hotlines for dog owners
I have said all of that before also but, it cannot be said enough! BSL isnt the answer! It wont work, it has been proven not to work! As soon as we ban all of the "pit bulls" and other so called "dangerous" breeds the bad, irresponsible owners will move on to the next breeds! Then what? We will ban all of those breeds.. and then the next and the next untill there are no more dogs left to ban! We need to stop running away from the problem and really fix it and untill that happens, nothing will change!

Another question making a referrence to the pit bull breed. How many times must this come up? How long before people actually understand the problem? How long before ignorance is replaced by knowledge? No animal, I don't care if it's a horse, a cat, a rat or a dog should be allowed to act in a way that will endanger a human life, unless that animal has been trained for that specific job and is acting under a handler's command. People here have a really bad case of either ignorance or ADD. They keep ignoring or forgeting the fact that all beings, including dogs, are a product of genetics and environment. They are not the product of a "bad owner" or a "bad trainer". You cannot make any dog do anything that the dog was not born to do. You cannot take a Yorkie and make a police dog out of it, why? Because of genetics. You cannot take a shepherd and make it into a bird hunting dog, why? Again, genetics. Stop talking nonsense and educate your self of the reality of the situation, not wishful thinking. No one in their right mind supports BSL, but, when the owners of breeds with aggressive tendencies and the propensity to bite hide behing ignorance and choose to sit here and tell the world that their dogs are the sweetest dogs in the world and on and on, add crap, the BSL legislature will win because people much smarter then "sweet" dog owners are looking at real statistics and results from all over the country in the form of bite ratios. Wake up and face reality, admit the truth about the breed, whatever breed that may be and take REAL WORLD steps to stop the problems.
ADD: Do you think that the thumb downs prove a point? I do..

I have always belived that to own a dog it should be mandatory to attend obedience classes. It would teach the owners as much as it would the dogs.
It should also be illegal to breed if you have not taken a course on it. In the couple of weeks I have been with Yahoo Answers I have seen so many people asking the simpliest questions that any breeder (or non breeder) should know. Whats even worse is those who are close to delivery and they have no idea what to look for or expect. One can only shake their head and wonder what these people were thinking of when they let their dog breed in the first place.
There are a lot of stupid owners. Mainly because it's too much trouble for them to learn. Hence the dog gets blamed for everything.
I'm not an expert by any means, but I always research everything before I do it. That included researching my dogs breed (Chihuahua's) and knowing what they needed and how to care for them before I even started to look for a breeder. If others would do the same our furry friends would not be blamed for someone elses ignorance.

You are right we must stop BSL. People need to stop buying dogs based on looks but rather on their ability to train, socialize and contain the dog they choose. They need to become educated in dog training and behavior. People need to be honest in their ability to handle the breed they want because not all breeds are suited for all people.
I do not know where the answerer who claims this post in is reference to pit bulls gets that idea because pit bulls are not mentioned here and they are NOT the only breed that is being considered dangerous, there are up to 10 breeds in some states that are being considered for BSL. Once we allow even one breed to be banned for our safety, we open the door to ANY and EVERY breed being banned.
In Italy they started out with 13 breeds on the dangerous dog list and now they are up to 92 and not all are large breeds. This is where we are headed if people do not fight BSL. If nothing is done, the next thing you know we will be visiting dogs in the zoo along with the rest of the dangerous and wild animals.
BSL has not resulted in a decrease in the number of dog bites in areas where it has been enacted. In the few places where dog bites did decrease after a ban was enacted it has been shown to be EDUCATION and NOT the ban itself that resulted in the decrease.
BSL is not about protecting people it is about ending all dog ownership.

I agree, dog bites are usually the result of a dog poorly raised. Yet,the damage is already done and usually they cant be rehabilitated, sadly. So,they are a "danger to society" and must be put down.

I agree. The ignorance of some people is unreal. Unfortunatly I when it comes to kids in danger though, those of us that are parents seem to get overprotective. But to kill a dog for it? Try to get rid of it before you kill it. There are different ways to stop them from biting than killing them.

Because some people are totally ignorant. They are ignorant because they don't know the real facts. Just what they read (that's sensationalized) in the newspapers and what they see on TV.
BSL sucks and doesn't work.

I agree. There are no dogs born bad. There are people that are bad owners and/or bad trainers.
