First off, congratulations for being able to pull off that dress! hehe. It's gorgeous! As far as the train goes, absolutely take it off when you're done with the ceremony and photographs. However, if there is another dress that you like even more, then you should probably go for that one. I find it a bit odd that your soon to be mother in law feels that she is so in touch with her sons taste in wedding gowns, lol. I think you know better what you will look good in, and what your soon to be husband would like to see you in. I understand the want to please, but when it's all said and done, do you really think his mother or yours is going to be disapointed in your choice of dress? My soon to be mother in law was not part of my dress shopping experience, not that I would have had it any other way, lol. But my Mom was, and she was pretty well the one who picked my dress even, I absolutely adore it, and it was the one that looked best on me. That's why I say that I understand your want to please, I wanted my Mom to like my dress too. But I remember the first dress I tried on, I liked it, but my Mom wasn't too keen on it. But I'm 100% certain that she would have been happy to see me happy on my wedding day in a gown that I loved. As far as changing into another dress, if that makes you happy then sure. Some women do it, I'm not going to though. When else am I going to be able to wear it? Can't really wear it to work, lol. I want to get as much use out of it that day as I possibly can. :)
Good luck! :)
ps. You should have posted the other dress too! :P I love looking at other people's dress choices! :)

yes by all means remove the train, change out of the dress into a simpler one even if you want to. Those big fancy dresses with the long trains are going to get very dirty when your dancing and if you spill food or wine on it during the reception, it might stain permanently depending on the material and the item spilled.
If your comfortable wearing the dress all day, just remove the train. IF the entire dress is a hassle, pick a simple brides maid type dress that you can wear after the photos for the reception.

Usually dresses that have a train have a bustle and you can tie up the train for the reception. My aunt's and best friend's dresses both had that. If you really feel the need to please everyone then maybe having 2 dresses would be the perfect solution. Celebrities do it all the time...but I've never seen anyone in "real life" do it. For the reception, you want something that's not too heavy and most importantly comfortable because you'll be running around talking to everyone and hopefully dancing a lot. Good luck with your wedding!

Of course you can, this days a lot of brides do that. As a matter of fact i'm looking for another dress for my reception also. If you were to keep that dress you can either remove the train which i think would be nicer or you can have the train bussle up which can be done where you alter your dress.
Good luck

Well for my wedding my dress had a long train and really heavy so after the wedding I took my pictures and changed before the reception into a cute little white dress.

Wear the dress and just remove the train at the reception.

Women usually don't change into a going away dress any more, or wear a different dress for the dance - because you only get to wear that special dress for ONE day! You could detach the train before you go to the reception, or just detach it for the dancing.

I know that you don't want to hear this, but when it comes to the wedding dress, that decision is yours and yours alone. Who cares what your mother and mother in law want? This is something that you will be wearing, not them. They've already had their weddings. Besides, who is going to be looking at those wedding photos - you or them? Wear something that you are 100% sure about. If you don't, you'll regret it.
And, yes, it is normal to remove the train. Your mother in law telling you that it's not just shows that you shouldn't be relying on her judgement.

A lot of gals change into another gown for the reception these days.I went to a wedding where the bride wore the traditional white gown for the wedding and then changed to a sari(the grooom's family was Indian) for the reception. She was able to incorporate both family's traditions into the evening.

it is getting extra hassle-free to enhance right into a receptions gown. I chosen to alter for my reception by way of my gown being no longer able to be bustled in any respect, i enjoyed my gown, yet in addition like to bop the evening away. I had a gown made in a classic kind that went with my wedding ceremony decor, the gown became around $one hundred even if it became precisely what i wanted for my reception and function worn it some time by way of fact.
