Its a feeling you realize is him, as its a feeling you have never felt before in your normal human life nor in your human flesh. Its like a supreme goose bumps and chills but w/o the chills and its replaced with warmth instead.
You might ask something, and give an answer, and nothing. Means you don't have it right, keep learning. But ask something, and have the right answer, that feeling I mentioned above comes over you. Or it might come over you while reading or watching something. That is telling you, pay attention, your answer is right in front of you.
I have used this, almost daily, and answer after answer after answer has been given to me. Even questions that are not the normal usually. Also, God does have a sense of humor. Most all, even christians, forget he made the smile, the laugh. And he does have a humor side. He uses humor to teach lessons and to stress points. Seen this side twice now and all I could do was say " I know, I know, you got me, I was wrong ". But I didn't feel bad, as he did it with a humor twist.
Calling him by name helps alot as well, plus you must be real from the soul when you speak to him, not just talk like you do to another human. Has to come from you, your soul for him to listen, otherwise he knows you are just mocking him.
Calling him not by name is no different than me screaming Sir Sir at you in a crowd and you not paying attention to me. If I scream your personal first name, you'd turn and pay attention. Same with God, for God is just a title, like sir, Mr., etc. YHWH or YHVH or Yahweh or Yodh Heh Waw Heh is God's personal first name. It was removed from the American bibles in 1919 due to a fight between the JW's and the Baptists.
Call him by name from your soul, and you will have his attention.

The Holy Spirit of God does speak. Some may not have the "ears to hear." Spiritual ears are needed and are there when the spirit of a person is awakened. He can use most any means He chooses...words, thoughts, visions...other people even.

I think when people say God "talks" to them they should say rather say He "communicates" because it's sometimes very subtle. Other Christians just mean He speaks through the Scriptures, which are His inspired words to men.
Often it's just a thought that comes in your head and it's like a special insight....a light bulb going off...and it has the ring of truth.
In a way, God communicates with all of us through our conscience....through nature....through the goodness of others

Yeah, I hear him just in real words, but it sounds like me talking...isn't that strange.
I think people all hear God speak differently and some, of course, not at all.

They're talking to themselves, and/or have voices in their heads and attribute them to God without any real justification. That's why the 'communication' is so similar to the way people speak, 'cause that's what it IS.

It is more of a feeling. It depends on how close you are to god.
