Alaska (49th state) was admitted to the Union on 1-3-59 and Hawaii (50th state) on 8-21-59. Was a new flag with 49 stars designed between the time Alasks joined the United States and Hawaii gained statehood? Or did we skip right from the flag with 48 stars to our present American flag with 50 stars?

Apparently there was from 1-3-59 until 8-21-59:
"Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically.
Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizon tally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically."
Interesting!

For 12 months between 4 July 1959 and 3 July 1960 the flag had 49 stars.
