It wasn't God's way of saying he screwed up. Man disobeyed, men were sinning and not following God's laws. SO he told Noah to build the ark and take the animals on it and destroyed the Earth and gave them a new chance, new beginning. The rainbow was his promise that he would never flood the earth again. The Bible says nothing about it being an apology.

No, God did not "make a mistake." The Bible said that he had "regrets" about making mankind when mankind chose evil. It was the people who did evil, not God. Go ahead and argue that God made a mistake in giving the people the option of doing evil in the first place. Certainly he could have compelled allegiance, but the Bible says that "without faith it is impossible to please God" and that throughout history, God has been looking for and setting apart those who have faith and choose God when they could choose evil.
The rainbow is not an "oops." It's a recognition that the wrath of God is a fearsome thing and that mankind needs some kind of reassurance that God is still "for" us even though we have fallen so short of what we could be.

God doesn't screw up. Rainbows are a natural pheomena. Of course all of nature is a product of God, so we can say that God created rainbows. Why He created rainbows, I guess is your question. God saying He's sorry???? For what?? How do you come to that? To suggest that God made a mistake is to suggest that we are superior to God. Dangerous thinking, at best.

Coming from a history major specializing in relugious studies: I dont think rainbows have anything to do with God. All I know is the old Irish folktale of the pot-o-gold at the end of one; and the scientific explaination of light being refracted off of water droplets creating a visible display of the entire spectrum of light (visible to the human eye, of course). Perhaps there was a rainbow at the end of the Noah story, signaling the end of God's cleansing of the earth. Thats all I've got for you.

No, absolutely not!! Realize what you are saying. We are talking about Almighty God. He can't screw up! Think for a second about God as you would concieve God. He isn't human, He is a Divine,Spiritual being. Humans are subject to falling, making mistakes and the like, but with a HIGHER power or God there is no 'Oops'.

No, a rainbow is Gods promise that when you see it, there will not be another world flood to wipe out all living things. The flood began because everything that God had created, the people, had become evil and chose to live their live for evil and God became displeased and told Noah to build the Ark, Noah listened...God saved him and Noah's family and Noah brought on 2 of each kind of land living animal to recreate life after the flood...the rainbow is God's promise that another world flood will not happen again

Rainbows are God's way of saying that he won't punish us by flooding the world again, not to say "Oops, sorry man". Look it up in the bible.

Incorrect assumption. A rainbow is god's way of saying to Man: 'You screwed up, now I'm really pissed. But the last time that happened I almost destroyed the world (Noah's flood) so now I'm gonna let you off with a warning.'

Um...no.
Genesis 9:8-17 (NIV)
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

Rainbows are a way to say that something isn't as it always seems. You see white light and you think it is just that, until you speed some of the rays up and slow others down did we realize that light is made up of many different wavelengths. Oh yeah, and that god isn't real.
