I would say that if the dog is going to be outside you are going to need a fence.
I used to live on 12 acres in a small country town and my dogs were all over town. The Border Collie and the Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound mix would follow the kids to school and hang around till they got out of school. Everyone in town knew them. They all even got to know that the 140 lb monster was just a really big puppy.
If you want a dog that is great with kids and all people that won't wander, so you don't need a fence, get an Old English Sheepdog. I am sure you have seen them and wondered how they can see with all that hair in front of their eyes, well the answer is, they can't. When we lived in town, before moving to the country, I would take him for walks and he would walk into hedges, telephone poles and such. He never left our yard because he could not see where he was going. They are big floppy lovable clowns. Because of their coat they take a bit of grooming.
I have never fed an adult dog more than once a day, though they do get a dog biscuit from time to time.

In a nut shell your saying you want a Boxer! Great watch dogs. Can be trained to not leave the yard. Very playful! They eat about 3 to 5 cups of quality dog food a day. split into 2 meals. They need a lot of exercise but as long as you let them run in the yard and mabey play some fetch or tug of war with them a couple times a week most are fine.. They do need to be trained like any dog to become a well mannered pet.

What's wrong with mutts? They can be the BEST solution for everything you're asking. Any dog from a shelter. There's no real answer to this question - some rottweilers will fit your requirements but not all, and some labradors will but not all. There's no "perfect breed for these reasons". Also, many dogs will be alright if you leave dry food out for them constantly. Seriously, go to a shelter - sometimes they have purebreds too. And really rethink the "no mutt" policy because they really can be some of the best dogs...not to mention a mix of breeds may fit your requirements better.

definitely some type of terrier (norwich or norfolk or cairn maybe). they have big dog personalities without actually being a big dog. they only need to be walked a few times a day. they're not exactly watch dogs but they bark if someone is approaching. but they're not viscious like a mastiff or something. they're really good with kids, and realllllyyy cute. :) only eats twice a day. most dogs only eat twice a day anyway. terriers are really good dogs, you should get one!

all dogs should be fed twice a day. why no mutts? they make wonderful pets.
How much do they eat? depends on the size, breed & activity level of the dog.
You need to spend some time at your local shelter to learn about dogs in general before you get one.

I think that you should look into west highland white terriers, I have one and he loves kids loves to play and keeps watch out our windows for any type of movement and if there is he barks to let us know. About the food all you have to do is train them to only eat once or twice a day, but they do need water out for them at all times. But I just love them cause they are very loveable.

Look on Petfinder.com. They have a ton of animals from shelters around your area in need of a home. On the website they have pics of the dogs and you'll beable to pic one that attracts you to it. Good luck on your dog hunt.
