Not hard at all. Take the 6 train downtown from 51 Street, get off at Grand Central and take the Shuttle train to Times Square. You could also take the 7 train to Times Square but the Shuttle train is faster since the 7 train has a stop at Bryant Park before getting to Times Square.
So take the 6 downtown from 51 Street to Grand Central and get on the shuttle train to Times Square.
The 6 train will have a green 6 in a circle so you know its the 6 train and make sure to get on the downtown train which will say "Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall"

My God! Of all the New York subway queeries yours is just about the easiest and least complicated. There is a subway that runs under Lexington Ave. You change at 42nd St-Grand Central to the Times Square Shuttle which goes only there.

Take the Times Square shuttle train. That will get you from the east side to the west side. To get to Lex Avenue, that's the 4,5, or 6 subway. On the way back, get off at Grand Central and look for the S train. That's the shuttle. Take that. It'll take you right near the Tussauds Wax Museum.

ah, people...give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. If you want to know how to get anywhere in new york via mass transit, go to hopstop.com and click on new york. You enter your starting place and your destination and it tells you how to get there. It also asks you if you prefer more stops/transfers or more street walking.

Also make sure your place from there is north of there or not, if its north, go take an Uptown train, if its south, go on a downtown train.
also check if your stop is served by only Local trains, or both Express and Local Trains.
