It will vary with the dog. I had a little, 7 lb Chihuahua, that got little more then 1/4 cup a day, plus treats. My little 20 lb Terrier gets maybe a 1/2 a cup. The Beagle, bigger than average at 40 lbs, gets around 2 cups. My 55 lb Pit gets about 3 1/2 cups. Watch the dog. If she seems to be losing weight give her more. If getting fat give her less. The best way to know is when you take her to the vet for her yearly check up is she keeping her ideal weight.
The vet was pleased the last time I took Snoopy, the Beagle, that he had lost 5 lbs.
I think a good rule of thumb is figure out what you think the dog needs and then cut it in half. You will end up with a dog that is not fat, which is as bad for them as it is for us.

Dog food like Eukanuba Active dry food is made specifically for active dogs. Follow the guidelines on the bag. If your are concerned about over feeding, check the dogs condition by feeling the ribs. There shouldn't be an excess of fat on the ribs, that is, you should be able to feel the ribs with only a slight pressure from your hand. If the ribs are too prominent, then you need to feed more. It is important not to overfeed in order to prolong your dog's life, but you must feed sufficiently to sustain your dog's health. This means you need to adjust food volume based on your observations of your pet.

If she has a fast metabolism and is active, look for a food made specifically for high energy/active dogs, and feed a little less than the feeding reccomendation. (The feeding reccomendation is always a LOT of food, because they want to make a lot of money. No way I'm feeding my Bernese Mountain Dog FIVE cups of kibble!)

Feed her one cup a day, of dry food. If she is skinny from having a fast metabolism, about once a week i would mix one uncooked egg in with her one cup of dry food. My mom does that with her dogs when they have a fast metabolism. also, be careful with cheap dog food, some of the cheaper brands have a lot of fillers in them that do nothing but turn straight to sugar in your dogs system. try an indoor formula, Purina dog chow works the very best. But she does NOT need more than one cup per day. Or just fill her bowl level with the top once a day.

Check the dog food bag - and feed her the best quality dog food you can afford. It makes a huge difference in their health. If the dog acts hungry even after the proper amount, let her have a little nibble to tide her over to the next meal. Some dogs need to be fed twice a day - morning and evening.

Read the feeding instructions on the bag or can of food - this will give you a good idea of how much to feed & you may need to adjust slightly. If your dog is very active, it may need more food.
