Vista is innovative, but many people believe that its innovated in many inefficient ways.
Vista level other than Basic have a cool 3-D layer interface, and seriously improved graphics. The start menu is changed, and widgets (little applications built into the desktop) are included. 3D sound is also incorporated.
Vista also has upgraded abilities. Its search abilities are improved (though still not optimal) by the use of meta information, or little descriptions of files. USB disks can use their memory to improve the RAM capabilities of your system, boosting speed. Old "shadow copies" of files are created that allow users to revert to earlier versions of files.
Some extras are thrown in too. Parental controls are included in the internet options, and MS Office's toolbars are condensed into a unique "ribbon" interface.
However, many people believe that installing vista on existing systems is too troublesome. 1G of RAM sounds good, but graphics cards, hard drive space, and processor speed also have specifi requirements. Many of your current applications may or may not work with vista. Search the web for complaints about installing vista, and you'll find many complaints.
My opinion is that it's entirely up to you to decide, just make sure that you research well.

If you dont need to install vista for aprogram or ap, dont. You need more memory, you havent given us the erst of the specs of your computer. Run upgrade advisor first. Aero is just bells and whistles that slow your computer down many of us geeks use vista business (like xp pro) but we disable aero. It is more stable asssuming all you aps and drivers are compatible. After a few weeks it is more user intuitive.
