i wish i could just say ... humanity in general
but yea christians and islam
islam basically
they kill people in the name of GOD ....holy war..they call it holy and kill
they pray all the time and still kill
Actually to think of it in a more logical sense no religion promotes killing...only people with vested interests

I once spent hours looking up information about this topic. Here are a bunch of links you might be interested in. Three or four of these websites are even from secular sources, instead of Christian apologetic sources. Religion has not caused the most bloodshed. Communism makes the Inquisition look like a drop in the bucket. Communism is an ideological package that includes the marginalization and eventual eradication of religion. Religion is to be replaced with a cult of personality built around the communist leader. Clergy and devout religious people are often targeted in communist countries. Communist leaders are atheists and see religion as a threat to the cult of personality built up around themselves.

All religions - not one is innocent of shedding the least blood!
It amazes me the amount of people who say Christianity when all religions have shed blood!
True Christianity isn't actually a religion anyway! If the adherents are born again then murdering isn't in their heart - only love! Anyone who says he/she is a Christian and murders is a wolf in sheep's clothing! How many people did Christ murder? None and so His followers murder no one either!

I know what answer you are looking for, behind this question- I am going to change it around a bit- there has been blood shed in every religion, from the beginning of time- but the one person who shed His blood for the whole world was Jesus.

.In answer to your question
It is sad that the two main and most powerful religions existing today were created through political expediency.
The Roman Catholic church was formed after, I believe it was Augustus Cesar who, tired of the number of christian's willingly or others, being led into the lions den, decided he must come up with a better solution. He created a New Church, a New Faith. He wrapped it up in incense and protocol and it was accepted by the illiterate, who far outnumbered the educated, and so it became a powerful force in the World.
The church of England was created by Hendry the eighth who needed to divorve one of his wives but the Roman Catholic church would not allow him, so he created his own church, The Church Of England.
I would suggest you look to Budhism, for here you will be led, not by selfish indulgence but by a man who saw himself as a teacher.
I am not a Budist, but if I had to make a choise in order to get into Heaven, it woould be my choice!

By my own research and understanding of history, I would say that that would be Islam
The very *essence* of Islam is to spread their religion by the sword (as well as by deception and other forms of oppression - it is all in the Koran and other related ancient Islamic texts), but if a Christian does that to spread Christianity (and it *has* happened much in history), it is an aberration and is, generally speaking, contrary to the Christian Faith.

Christianity, not only w/ wars, but also with the killing of people of other religions, the killing of people who questioned their religion (back in the day) and and the killings in the witch trials. Not to mention the killings of the Native Americans in North, Central, and South America by Christian explorers.

Sorry, asker, this is half answer to you, half response to Stony's answer.
Statistically It's got to be Christianity. WWII was caused by Hitler's Christian extremism (yes, he thought he was serving God). America and Britain are Christian countries (by identity) and are currently slaying Muslims like it's going out of fashion.
I think that religion itself began as a weapon of war, using the idea of a greater being looking after you as a confidence boost, and a way of ridding yourself of the responsibility when you kill someone (I did it for God/Allah/etc..)
