It is safe and highly recommended since Microsoft is constantly releasing patches to try and keep their rickety boat from sinking.

For the general user like you and me, yes, they are safe. It is rare that they would cause you any problems, and in case they do, there is usually a fix you can apply while you sit and curse Microsoft.
The updates are sent to you to help plug up holes in your current operating system to help protect you. Mostly. Some are sent to verify you aren't using an illegally obtained copy of Windows. If you ARE, the updates will stop coming, and you will likely fall victim to some lovely virus of some kind.
So, yeah. Set it (to download) and forget it. If you see that yellow shield, double-click it, click Custom, take a quick look at what you are installing, and then install.

For the most part, yes...I'm pretty sure there's a few updates in there that will, for example, effectively send your playlist back to Microsoft and other minor things, or the update that brutally sodomizes and disfigures Windows Media Player 10 and then calls it Windows Media Player 11...but for general users it's allright.

It is safe. But all unneeded updates will be downloaded.
For instance you have WMP 9 it will upgrade it. Some of the UPD are not needed for home computing.
