Is it safer for my 9 year old son to sit in the front seat of my car or to sit in a bus with no seat belts?

Easy. On a bus. Accident rates in private cars are much higher than a bus. Buses rarely have fatalities or injuries in accidents, mostly due to the slower speeds.

Depends on the bus. If it is one of the short buses, they have integrated seatbelts/carseats so he would be buckled in there. Basically, the reason why passengers can be unbelted on a school bus is "compartmentalization". The bus seats are soft and flexible, so if a passenger moves forward into the seatback in front of him, the seatback moves forward too, helping the passenger ride down the crash.

Now, a child in the front seat, say your child weighs 80lbs and you are in a head on collision at 30mps, he body turns in a 2400 lbs force of impact. Then, if you have an airbag, THAT airbag is coming at him at 240mph. The absolute safest place for your son is in the backseat. IF he is not 4'9" tall, then he needs to be in a booster for the seatbelt to properly fit him.

Also, I agree that Safeguard needs to get after the Legislation to get their integrated seatbelts into every single bus in the US.

HTH!

if in the front seat then buckle up but in buses I have not seen any seat belts. I think this should be enforced. If we can get a ticket for not wearing our seat belts then why is it o.k. for us not to wear them on the bus? Now that is sad.

Good point. Life gets violent when seat belts on buses is the subject. Take the car.

A bus, but only because most don't have seat belts. It is always advisable (and legal) to have a child in a seat belt.

Probably belted in the front seat of your car.

The fact that school busses don't have seatbelts is INSANE in my opinion. It's not universal, by the way. The school busses where I live all have seatbelts and the kids are required to use them.

Hopefully the clowns at NHTSA will get their heads out of their collective backsides and update the safety standards for school busses. Ditto for the state legislatures.

Current schoolbus standards will provide minimal protection to children who are seated squarely in their seats and are facing forward in case of a frontal impact. They provide ZERO protection for side impacts or rollovers. (And how often do you think that kids on a schoolbus sit in their seats as they should, let alone face forward?)

possibly safe in the front seat, but if he/she is still rather short for his/her age, I recommend a booster seat, or one of those 4'9 seats, or whatever they're called :~)

but, yes the bus is safe, they are designed for children, and are purposely made without seat belts.

a bus is safer because people drive more carefuly around them + an airbag can kill a child.

it just doesn't make any sense does it. but at least when you follow saftey rules when your child is with you if anything happens you won't be guilt ridden.
