It depends on what you're looking for, those are two totally different cars (convertible roadster vs. a luxury sedan). Personally I wouldn't get either as I think BMWs are rather overpriced and overrated, but that's not what you asked.
If this is going to be your only car, I wouldn't recommend the Z4 because it is not very pratical -- only seats 2, very little cargo room, probably fairly noisy since it's a convertible. Would be a fun second car, though. But if you're okay with these limitations, go for it. Only you can really answer that.

I would much prefer the 5 Sries. I've had a couple of these cars, and they are wonderful. Very sporty, you have to go with stick shift, not the automatic. This will help you out in the winter as well as they are rear wheel drive. It really is a great driving car with so many fun features. It is a very safe car as well, with lots of guages and warning lights. Mine had a fuel saver feature that would tell you when you step on the gas pedal what your average MPG is. They are also very safe cars; mine took a side hit with my boyfriend driving, it caved in the drivers door about a foot in, but he walked away without a scratch. It saved his life, so it did it's duty, but was a total loss. Still miss her.
Enjoy whichever you choose. BMW is a good name. Don't let anyone scare you about repair costs; there are many outlets on the internet for re-built guaranteed parts, and if you have a Pep-Boys auto in your area, they do good work at the price they quote, no "oops, it's going to take twice as long" stuff.

I personal a bummer and they are large yet till you're a sturdy abode mechanic bypass because restoration shops fee alot for exertions. IMO the z4 is more advantageous helpful than the Challenger in each way till its a srt-8. having said that flow with the warranty.

I like the Z4 better, so buy it. Or you could buy according to your own needs, which seems like the better idea.

Think of mileage per gallon, insurance and how many people you'd normally take. I'd go for the 530 cause of safety.
