on maps, all the roads and streets in Spain say Carrer in them e.g. "Carrer de Murillo" which makes me think it may mean "street". Ive tried babelfish to translate it but it only says "to carrer"

Carrer is not spanish, it's catalan and the spanish word is "calle". Maybe you were seeing it on a map of Cataluña, where both catalan and spanish are spoken, and that's the reason why there appears carrer and don't calle.

"carrer" is the Catalan equivalent of Castilian "calle" = street

I'm from Mexico, so I'm not sure... it migh be a way spanish people use to refer to 'calle' (street) or 'carretera' (road, highway).
