Depends on the type of rod & reel being used.........

If it's a regular rod with Fixed spool / spinning reel, hold it so that the finger you use to give "the finger" (you know, the rude gesture) is in front of the leg attaching the reel to the rod, and the next finger after that before your little finger is behind the leg and tighten your hand round it. Use the finger nearest your thumb to pinch the line against the rod before releasing the bail-arm on the reel to cast.
If you're right handed, hold the rod in your right hand, with the handle to reel in on the left.
If you're left handed, hold the rod in your left hand, with the handle on the right.
If you need to swap the handle over, DO NOT undo the screw while stood over wooden decking 'cos I did that once while on holiday, and ended up having to order a replacement part from the manufacturer after I got back 'cos it fell down between them and into the water, never to be seen again.

When casting, you usually have to hold the end of the rod handle with the hand you use to reel in, to give it a bit more control (other wise when not casting, you hold it with the rod handle / "rod butt" it goes under your arm your holding it with).

If the rod is a baitcasting / spincasting type with a "trigger grip" on it + has a baitcasting multiplier or spincasting reel mounted on top, then you wrap your hand round the handle, place the finger nearest your thumb round the "trigger grip", and use your thumb to control the spool on the baitcasting multiplier and / or the trigger on the reel used for casting.

Both hands below the reel, set the friction wheel on the reel to about four pounds, find the balance of the rod with one hand should be below the reel toward the butt (left hand if a right handed person) using the right hand below the left when making a strike

Okay, I've lost a couple of rods by not holding it right. Big fish came along, and I wasn't ready, not paying attention. Ripped it right out of my hands, lost forever in the lake.

Where the reel is attached to the pole, put your forefinger on top of it, (your thumb on the side facing you), and the rest of your fingers below it.

If you get a big yank when you aren't expecting it, at least the rod just won't slide out of your hands, you have a solid piece between your fingers.

Sorry, hard to explain, much easier to show you how.

Good luck fishing! :-)

You're going to need both hands. If you are right-handed, use your right hand to grip the rod where the fishing reel is attached. Split your index and middle middle and slide the reel to pole attachment between them. Then with your other hand you turn the reel knob to bring in the line.
