Mythbusters did a show on this phenomenon and couldn't come up with any conclusive results. Scientists are still out why we yawn anyhow. Wikipedia has a few of the hypotheses on why we yawn but no one has come up with anything definitive yet. One of life's little mysteries.

Scientists have not been able to prove why, but there are many theories. Such as: yawning was an ancient from of communication that humans used and it is passed on in our genes to reply when someone yawns. Some scientists think that when you yawn you are inhaling a lot of oxygen, but at the same time you are exhaling lots of CO2, so the scientists think that yawning is used to exhale excess CO2 from your system. So when the other person exhales the excess CO2 it increaces the amount of CO2 in the room. So when you breathe the extra CO2 in then you will yawn to get it out.(Personally I think this one is a load of crap, because even when you see someone in another car or something yawn you yawn)

I don't know why... I heard that the reason why people yawn it's because they are lacking oxygen.

It's kind of like itching. When someone is talking about itching, you start feeling like you need to itch.

I guess it's mind over matter type of ordeals...
