Instead of buying a replacement power cable all together??

Previous answer was mistaken. The 3 prong on a dryer is 220V. The electrical code was changed in 1998? to require a 4 prong for 220V. If you look at the wiring the 3 pr0ng has 2 "hot" wires and 1 ground. If you look at the 4 prong it will have 2 "hot" wires, a return, usually white and a green for ground. This is an extra safety feature. You can change the plug to three prong but you will need to connect the return and ground wires inside the dryer. If the outlet is not far from the circuit breakers or fuse box I would pull another wire and change the outlet. The change in code does not require retrofit of existing wiring but it is probably better if you do.

Nope... the 4 prong is for 220 volts, the 3 is only 110, the dryer will not work without 220. If you try it you risk damaging the dryer and/or wiring in your house.
